No one really cared did they though? Also, losing performance at this point is irrelevant. Mobile tech is showing that you can easily underclock high end chips and maintain VERY viable performance. My laptop is a prime example of what's to come in a few years. In all fairness, this should have happened already. Years ago, in fact.

Performance per watt and absolute performance are usually highly correlated. If they reduce the total clock speed or keep it static they can increase the dept of their pipelining. What I take from this is that intel is focusing on its low power SoC more than high end server and desktop chips.

Obviously perf/w scales into overall perf for GPUs, because those workloads are inherently parallel(you can always add more die area to get more performance). It's much harder to extract instruction level parallelism, so it doesn't really translate to single threaded performance. Hell, it doesn't translate to multithreaded performance either until Intel decides to start increasing core counts on their mainstream parts.

Also, "Internet of things" is pretty much a garbage marketing phrase these days. I have zero desire for a toaster with wifi, and many IoT devices are even worse than that, it's really pretty rare finding a device that can do its primary function better if it's connected to the internet, even if you do, there are still all the security concerns about turning network vulnerabilities into physical vulnerabilities, like the stupid number of people that have their internet connected security cameras exposed to the world with no authentication necessary.

5ghz xeons and 10 core e chips was the writing on the wall, time for either breaking compatibility with older software or a new player to enter the dt market eg arm, cant see it happening though.
