970 vs 390x! Benchmarks welcome! Need help.

Thread Starter
Hello fellow OCNers.

My 980 died on me, sparks and everything.

As such, I am in a need of a new card. I have a budget of about $400.
I was deciding between the 970 FTW+ ACX 2.0+ vs a 390x. Now, I know that if you get a good rated 970, you can overclock them like crazy, but I can't seem to find any benchmarks with a high clocked 970 card vs a 390x.

Considering that the 970 FTW+ is around $380 and the 390x is $390, from most of the benchmarks at stock clocks, It's a very obvious win for the 390x. However, does that change with high OC on the 970?
Any and all insight is welcome!

the R9 390X is faster then the GTX 970 period, there's no debate thumb.gif.

I know it's faster at stock, but from what I've seen the 390x doesn't overclock well at all, where as the 970 you can push from a stock clock of around 1100 all the way up to 1550. So I wonder if a well overclocked 970 would outperform or come close to a 390x.

Even with a massive OC on the 970? (I'm only asking to make sure, I do believe you though!)

And I called up Asus, they are not willing to uphold the warranty as the card was heavily OCed. Still in the talks with them. If I can convince them to replace it, I'd be happy.

A 970 isnt 1100mhz stock, thats just base clock.
You should be looking at boost clock wich is mostly in the lower 1300mhz region on aftermarket cards. (some aftermarket cards boost even close to 1400mhz)
1300mhz to 1550mhz is just 19%

A 390x is standard around 1050mhz
1050 to 1250mhz is also 19%

So overclock headroom is more or less similar IMO.

With a massive OC on the 970 we will put a massive OC on the 390x

Just check reviews and users post here on OCN.
390x gets around 1200-1250mhz, 970 around 1500-1600mhz.
390x still wins in majority of games.
970 is like 90% of a 390x.
970 uses alot less power, especially once both are overclocked but the 970 also has the 3,5GB thing going on.

Did you bios mod your 980 and RMA it with that bios back to Asus ?

Any other manufacturer would replace the card, even if some of them ask for a fee for physical damage like burn marks.... like MSI and Gigabyte.

Shot yourself in the foot buying ASUS in the USA.

390/390X at 1250 MHz? That's pretty high for air. It will require alot of cooling at this speed.

I've tried Sapphire 390 Nitro and MSI 390X Gaming, they maxed out at 1170 and 1205. The RPM's were very high after ~1125, definitely not "silent" like most custom 970's at 1500-1550 MHz.

By max out, i'm talking about solid OC, not temporary clocks for benching. I saw artifacting past those speeds.

All comes down to what people prefer. 970 can be fast and pretty silent, 390X is like 10% faster but louder, alot of heat dumping inside the case. Much higher watt usage.

Thats what i said, 10% faster while sucking more power.

1200mhz is commen on a 390x
1250mhz is upper limit

Same as i said for 970
1500mhz is common
1600mhz is upper limit

I got a 290x at +200mv 1200mhz 24/7 (max clock 1220mhz)
Its still very silent and fans never go past 50%, its all about the cooler on the card (Vapor-X here)
So you can find good coolers on the 390x to, yes the same cooling capicity on a 970 will run cooler and more silent but i rather have the 10% extra peformance and full 4GB Vram or in the 390x case 8GB Vam.

Its just a matter of choice and since the line between these cards are rather tin threads like these are created often.
Especially when you talk 970 vs 390 (non x)

$250 Max for a 4GB card. Unless you will stick to 1080. Then you are good. The 970 is fast. It can be oc'ed to match a 980 even. It's the 0.5 VRAM that is slow.
