This is a great thing for indie devs as well as anyone wanting to dip their toes into the game; no strings attached except for having to use the (excellent) AWS is a big burden lifted off any team's shoulders.

Using their services seems like an easy way to reduce overhead considering it's Amazon.

I hope you can make in game purchases on amazon with it. Itd be awesome having the trading Depot like in fc4 for weapons when you go to it it's actually the Amazon page and you can order whatever you want IRL... Lol

I'm not gonna lie, Never thought I'd see Amazon delve this deep into gaming. The Twitch acquisition was one thing but wow they're going headfirst in. Not bad for free though! wink.gif I'm impressed.

Always good to see a new engine, I wonder if Amazon will get into publishing.

Free is great, but AWS is hardly cheap. I've been developing a platform which will need about 12TB of storage on 5 or more machines, and while the price varies depending on specs and config, 12 months of AWS costs more than all the hardware would.

All that is basically to support a mobile app, so I can't imagine what running gameservers is like.

Why not build a Storage Spaces SAN? Or use old parts and build a FreeNAS box. At home SAN is the same thing as the "Cloud" and you control your data. Its the route I would go for home or small business use. The biggest cost is the drives themselves. Just be warned that big drives and RAID don't go together very well because your array will most likely fail again before it rebuilds. Storage Spaces overcomes this by creating Virtual Drives and storing multiple copies across physical drives.

I look forward to the inevitable article linked on HackerNews, "How I accidentally racked up $20,000 in AWS charges while using Amazon's Triple-A Engine."

Saw the screen shot and got excited about a new possible benchmark. Oh well...
