Dual Xeon E5 2680 V2 workstation - Ram advise (overclock)

Thread Starter
Hi guys.
I am currently building a workstation with two dual xeon cpus E5-2680 V2 and need an advice.
I have limited budget for ram. The main question is will it be possible to take 1333 or 1600 DDR3 non-ecc ram and overclock it upper to 1866 mhz or higher? I ask because intel's datasheet says this cpu supports memory up to 1866 Mhz. So I'm a bit confused - what better to prefer 32 Gb 1866 mhz, or 64 Gb 1333/1600 DDR3 ram?

It would be very cool to take less expensive 1333 mhz 64 gb ram, but I am not sure if it can be overclocked on Gigabyte/Asrock dual socket motherboards.

I read before that ECC ram does NOT overclock almost at all, maybe 8-10%, but how about non-ecc ram?
Please be informed - that the main question is about RAM, I know that Xeon E5 does not support overclocking themselves.

The second question is - will it worth to take 32 Gb ECC ram instead of 64 Gb non-ecc?
How much speed is important in this case and how important type (Non-ECC/ECC) of memory for a workstation?

Thanks in advance.

Is it theoretically possible? yes. Can you actually do it? I have no idea.

You can overclock as high as you weakest stick of ram will let you. Its one of those things where you just wont know until you do it.

If you are buying cheaper ram I would not be very optimistic about the overclocking potential though.
