As long as I do not update the bios, it will continue to overclock.

That exactly the kinda stuff I want to hear tongue.gif

What about mircocode updates through windows? Could that block it?

I don't see how they can block this after the bios is already out there. If it comes as a windows update, you could just block it too.

I was always tempted by the g3258 but the 2c/2t is a little short imo for a htpc/light gaming machine. With 4t I might have to give this a go. I am downloading all the bios for the microatx boards just in case smile.gif

As I posted earlier, AsRock already scrubbed its site. So you may have trouble finding the right BIOS versions.

I'm seeing all the SKY OC BIOSes still available.

I was hoping this wouldn't get fixed.

The i5-6600K is the first CPU in a long while that I actually wanted, but at $250ish it's a bit too much. I remember i5-2500k and i5-3570K being around $160-180 and the i7-2600k / i7-3770K at around $220 at Microcenter

The beta BIOSes that included SkyOC in the first place have been scrubbed from the company's site, along with the announcement page for the feature.

A while ago, WCCFtech noticed some rumors that Intel was about to roll out new firmware updates to disable base clock overclocking support on non-K CPUs from the Skylake family. The company apparently didn't like the idea of users grabbing inexpensive versions of Core i3 and i5 chips and pushing them close to Core i7-levels of performance, and now those restrictions have come to pass.

This is roughly the same scenario as what happened back in the Haswell days, when Intel dropped support for limited multiplier overclocking on non-K chips from that family.
Strange. Maybe AsRock restored them.

Asus still has them up too.

I wonder if manufactures can legally keep the old bios available. If they have some type of legal contract, one would think this would be covered and it never would have happened. Isn't it Intel's fault? Multipliers are locked per the cpu right? Shouldn't this be too?

The 18xx versions of ASUS z170 boards completely block you from reverting to the older BIOS's that supported non-K OCing.

Anyone know a workaround for ASUS? I have only been able to find one person who claims to have an edited 18xx version that will flash(for OC support,) but I haven't been able to get it from him.
