looking to build a 2007 gaming pc need help

post #1 of 10

ok before u guys ask i have my main desktop that i use for video editing and watching movies on that runs LINUX since all of the pc games i play came out before 2007 and since i can source the parts for fairly cheap i figured id build a decent gaming pc from 2007 to play games like starship troopers doom 2 quake and the like. since most of the processors that came out between 2006 and 2007 were althlon 64X2 and first generation phenom X4 cpu's im wondering whats the best dual core athlon 64 or best quad or tripple core first gen phenom for overclocking
post #2 of 10
Why do that? You can probably get it to work on your current system if you tried searching a bit. 2006-2007 is not that far back.

Question for you;

Instead of building on old tech, why not use a FX-83xx with a GTX 750TI for example? It would be cheap and cheerful - yet more than powerful enough to play the games you have in mind? biggrin.gif

An AM1-based system with an Athlon 5350 would work perfectly. The AM1 processors are similar to the 2006-07 era K8's already, only they perform better, support DDR3 memory, have modern instruction sets, and are as cheap as buying old components that might be at the end of their life.

what is the game you want to play so that we might be able to give better advise to you? I personally have not seen games that only run on specific hardware though.

as you can see from the links i provided the game only supports certain cards while other cards create glitches

ha! yes that would cope easily - i had a Athlon 5350, and was so surprised that it played Far cry 1 with all the eye candy on full. Great chip one of my favourites thumb.gif

I'd still agree with the lads above - try the AM1 and if you have glitches get the GTX 750TI smile.gif This way you can get cheap hardware that is new and plenty powerful for your needs.

It would be rather weird to have issues with Nvidia cards in that game due to the demo of it being on the Geforce website thumb.gif

AM1 platform can be had (APU + MB + RAM) for under $100 I recon. Since I am based in Europe - I paid ~€85 for the 3 Athlon 5350 + Asus AM1M-A + 4GB Ram.
