I've been lured to the Blue side

I built my current system in 2009. It's showing it's age. Tax season=what can we build time!

I was excited when I heard skylake CPU's were actually being released at a sensible price, so this is what I came up with for my semi-budget minded overhaul.

i5 skylake 6600k
Gigabyte GA-Z710XP-SLI motherboard
Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming
G.Skill Ripjaws V 16gb (2x8gb) DDR4 2400
Mushkin Enhanced Eco2 512 GB SSD
Silverstone TD02-Lite AIO
Acer G257HU smidpx 25" IPS monitor

Reusing my case, my HDD, and my Corsair CX600M PSU
I cheaped out on the ram and ssd because after looking up a lot of info on DDR4 ram and performance, I couldn't justify the cost of more expensive ram vs what I bought. Especially when you consider what I'm currently using. Same goes for the SSD. It's just for games so it doesn't need to be too big, and even a budget SSD is vastly superior to the HDD i have.

I'm very new to intel. I haven't had an intel computer in 15 years when I had my Gateway Performance 1000 with a PIII Coppermine 1ghz cpu.

So hello there Intel people. I may be asking questions about this setup when I get it in a couple days and throw it together. Hopefully everything goes smoothly and I can push it near the 4.5ghz range. And last me another 7 years.

Dont re-use the Corsair CX its not very good so get something better
Why you should not buy a Corsair CX

And you should drop the AIO cooler as well and get a good air cooler instead.

The only air cooler worth getting at this performance level is the Noctua NH-D15 and there's no way of cramming that hunk of metal into my case. My NH-U12P just barely clears the door. For the 70ish bucks I'm paying for the TD02-Lite it's worth it. The next step up would've been the Corsair H105 but I couldn't justify paying nearly 30 dollar more for 3-5c cooler temps.

I like how your old computer is basically as good as my current computer (Have an i5-750 coming in soon). When do we get pics?

Common misconception wink.gif Cryorig R1 Ultimate and Phanteks PHTC-14 PE are just as good as well as a few others there or there abouts.

This on a 6700k at 1.4v 4.6Ghz TPU's new setup. The R1 universal uses a slim front fan that loses it a couple of C over the Ultimate.

But if you cant fit one in then cool, it's just so many people insist the Noctua is the only game in town, its not.

I assume this is a gaming rig?

Only other thing I'd advise is getting some 3000+ RAM I know you said it wasnt worth it but I dont believe its a massive amount more, what 15 or 20 dollars? And it can make a difference, in Fallout 4 for instance.

Also, I know its DDR3 but

http://www.overclock.net/t/1487162/an-independent-study-does-the-speed-of-ram-directly-affect-fps-during-high-cpu-overhead-scenarios

And in many other games in sections where the CPU gets hit hard. Like MMO's or strategy games, or sections with lots of physics work.

Just my thoughts, enjoy the build thumb.gif

The corsair PSU in this case is fine.

Just because they are not great, does not make them a bomb.

I agree with you that people should not be buying them if you can get a better quality one, but he already has one and it seems to be working fine.

once the parts come in ill take some pics of it crammed into my beat to hell p182 case. Gotta modify it a bit so the radiator has proper ventilation up top.

I was lookin at some benchmarks and with ddr4 it seems like tge scaling isnt nearly as great as with ddr3. The biggest jump is going from ddr4 2133 to ddr4 2400. I was thinking of getting something a little better but decided not to for now. Might upgrade that later if i feel like its holding me back. I wish there were more benchmarks out showing ddr4 memory scaling in games like the ddr3 tests.

Anyways, the thing with the cooler is, all of the air cooler worth buying cost 90+. The aio im getting is nearly on par with them, and costs quite a bit less. And for 105 the corsair h105 will beat any air cooler, so if i was gonna pay more i would get that.

Well I disagree with you on the cooler, I've spent a lot of time researching the facts and I dont believe the H105 would outperform the larger air cooler without having very fast and noisy fans, especially on an Intel quad core. But this is something that always turns into a big argument on here and I dont have the energy for it. If youre happy to buy a CLC and prefer the look then the Silverstone will definitely cool your chip sufficiently.

I saw some testing from Anand and Legitreviews on DDR4 scaling, problem is you need to test in CPU limited situations. Hard OCP simulated this in their Skylake review by running benches at ultra low res, but I believe the same would apply if you were playing an MMO or a part of a game with a lot of CPU work.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2015/08/05/intel_skylake_core_i76700k_ipc_overclocking_review/6#.VrwxYHkcGyo

It's not a huge difference, so if you wanted to upgrade in the future there would be some benefit. I always feel like the reasons not to use faster RAM have the same arguments that people use to justify buying AMD CPU's for gaming over Intel. 80% of the time you might not notice, but when it helps it helps quite a lot.

Again, good luck with the build thumb.gif

If you get CLC , please look at a AIO watercooling kit like the H220-X2.
There is many good air coolers out there.
What is the case you will be using?

As for the SSD Mushkin Enhanced Eco2, I would change it. Had 3 already dead within 2 months.
CX600M is ok PSU for a low power system, not one that like. It is just not stable to handle OC very well.

Oh I absolutely agree. The H105 has to run its fans at 100% to cool as well as it does, and it IS noisy, but the trade off is yeah, it's noisy, but it keeps the temps down with an overclocked quad core intel. I don't care about noise, which is why I'm going with the cooler I got. I wear headphones when I'm on my PC, so noise isn't a factor.

I absolutely don't think the H105 could keep up with a high end air cooler while retaining the same decibel limits.

Most of the games I play may be able to use faster ram, but with what I'm going to compared to what I have, the extra few frame rates I might be able to pull out won't be missed haha. Maybe when I have a bit of extra cash I will go and splurge on some nice ram. The motherboard i'm getting has been proven to handle up to ddr4 3600 no problem just by enabling XMP.

The case I have is an old Antec P182. I know for certain the NH-u12p I have in there is nearing the limit of what fits inside. I think if I did put a cooler like the NH-D15 it would run into issues with clearing my door, which is really the only reason why I want an AIO. I also move my pc every once in a while and hanging a heavy heat sink off the board always makes me nervous.

We'll see how the eco2 runs. If it dies, I'll probably return it and get a better one or something.

I just noticed something. I have the 512gb version of the Eco2, and it uses a different SSD Controller vs the Eco 2 128, 240, and 480. They used the Sand Force SF-2200 and mine is using the SMI - SM2246EN. I wonder if that will have any impact on reliability.
