So I'm a laptop moron. Halp.

What is your maximum budget?

Not a dime more than $1,100 USD pre tax.

What country are you in?

US of A, baby...

What will be the uses of this laptop?

Gaming, basic computing and web work, video and photo editing.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?

I like "box" brands, but frankly, I'm willing to do whatever I need to do to get what I want UNDER that number up there...

What screen size do you require?

15" or 17"

What screen resolution do you require?

Full HD, but anything better in my price range is cool.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?

New, please...

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)

It will be plugged in, charging, and on standby most of it's life. It will do only basic computing 80% of the REST of it's life. You tell me...

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?

I play a varied list: Civ: BE, Battlefront, WH: Space Marines, other Civ games too, lots of Steam games, Sword Coast Legends, the Elder Scrolls games, The Long Dark...

What operating system do you need? (if any)

Windows 10, and I'll probably do a clean 10 Pro install anyway. See below...

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)

Aluminum wouldn't be bad, but other than that and no OBNOXIOUS colors, I don't care. I'm gonna put stickers on it...

How much hard drive space do you need?

I NEED the OS to be on a SSD, and I don't care if it's a M.2 that I install, or what. That's part of my issue. I want to buy something cheap-ish, and then if I have to do a clean install of Windows 10 Pro and clean the crap out, I will. I want 1 TB of storage behind that.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)

No need for a disc drive of any kind; the more of the modern ports the better, but nothing specific beyond at least one USB 3.0...

Is there anything else we need to know?

I have pre-selected two 15" class laptops that fit me, so far. Someone can tell me I'm wrong, please. I've seen pros and cons on both.

The Acer Aspire V Black Edition and the Asus ROG are both "good", but both have cons. Some say the Acer is near impossible to work on yourself, and others say the ROG is a worthless piece that's filled with junk.

Again, I've not owned a "gaming" laptop since 2011, and I don't want to waste my money.

I'm selling my desktop, and I plan to KEEP my monitor, so as to be able to game on the laptop alone, OR plug it to the 30" and sit down and play that way too. That's part of the reason a 17" is not vital...

Thanks - T

Stay away from the Acer garbage. Those are not in the same league as the rest. Asus is making a bunch of junk right now and putting out bios's that don't even work or support the hardware they put in the laptops. I bought 2 already the past 3 months and both had major issues and were returned. Asus support sucks too.

MSI is where it's at right now as far as very nice quality gaming laptops. They have the BEST AUDIO by far and are miles ahead of the rest, I mean BIG TIME. Their keyboards (Steelseries) are badass and have full RGB customization. The cooling is top notch and has Cool Boost 3 technology that has a button on the side of the keyboard that you can press at any time and have the fans at 100% instantly. They support 2.5" drives, Sata3 m.2 drives, and best of all PCI-e NVMe SSD's m.2 drives. I would look for a model that doesn't come with the m.2 drive and add in your own Samsung 950 Pro and do a fresh install of your OS. It will be WAY BETTER that way.

Right now the 6820K Cpu is overclockable and is a BEAST. Running same 4ghz clocks it's faster than a 4790K desktop cpu. The 4790K has to be overclocked to 4.5ghz all cores to match the performance of the 6820K cpu in the MSI GT72, or any other laptop that has it. The 6700HQ is a good i7 quad core but it's about 25-30% slower but it's solid. I'd go no less than the 6700HQ if I were you.

Look to get Skylake that has DDR4 memory as some manufactures are making some with older DDR3 memory which takes more power and it's slower. DDR4 2133mhz 1.2v is the base now with most. 16gigs is perfect for a gaming laptop these days.

You can get the MSI GT72 Barebones setup for $1199 which is $100 more than you are looking to spend, but it's a huge step in performance and comes with the 6820K which is well worth it once you buy and now have Desktop performance from your Cpu and can do anything you want. Plus my cpu in this laptop idles at 20c for the most part, or in the low 20's. Asus G752 cpu idles around 40c and so did the Alienware I had. The fans go to slow to keep it cool. The MSI fans you can't hear at all and it keeps it 20c cooler than the others. Gaming it only hits 75c with auto fans, or mid 50's if you use the Cool Boost 3 feature.

MSI = FTW thumb.gif

There's other MSI's that are in your budget, check them out!!

Would I be smart to get a GPU w/ min. 4GB dedicated memory, or will 2 do?

I think I already know the answer.

Thanks - T

imo 4gb should be a minimum for any gaming computer...textures are getting larger all the time...getting 2gb could really limit the games you can run well

A LOT of the MSIs I'm seeing are Nvidia GTX 970M 3GB cards. From there, the price jump is too large for me to stomach, from roughly the $1300ish range to $2000 to get more than that.

Would that fit? I figure it would...

Check out the Dell Outlet store. Sounds to me like an Inspiron 15 7559 series with the 4GB GDDR5 GTX960m would be well suited for your needs. And at the outlet store, they sometimes have amazing deals. Even getting the Inspiron 15 7559 new is a pretty darn good deal...
If you want something really portable then maybe look into an XPS 15 9550. Again, the outlet store can get you way down in price. I passed on one with the i5-6300HQ that was $800 for me...

3gigs for the Min Vram for sure. the 970 on 1080p with 3gigs is pretty good. on a laptop sized 1080p screen, we don't need anything higher than 2xAA of any sort. I use between 2.5-2.8gigs with maxed settings pretty much.

4gigs of Vram should be the sweet spot tho. I have no issues with my 970m 3gig tho

So what about porting out and running a 30" Korean IPS at x2600?

I'm assuming I need a minimum for that, then.

For that high, you would want to get a 6gig 970m or 8gig 980m for 2600p res monitor. That's even too much for 4gigs honestly unless you are playing games at low-med settings with no AA, or a way older game.

Just for example, I'm playing the new Rise of the Tomb Raider now on my beast of a desktop at home, but I'm not playing on my 27" Asus Swift 1440p monitor for this game, I'm playing with a Xbox One controller and hooked up to my 65" Samsung 7150 LED TV. So I'm only playing in 1080p res, BUT with maxed game settings and using the SMAA setting and not 2x MSAA or 4x MSAA, I turn off Depth of Field and Motion Blur because I don't like any blurring effects, but with those settings at 1080p I'm seeing as much as 6.9 gigs of Vram being used from my Titan X 12gig buffer. Could you imagine what the Vram usage would be if I was playing at 1440p, or crazy 2600p res? LOL. At 2600p res I'd be using all 12 gigs for that game lol.

Just want you to know before you get something that doesn't work for you wink.gif

For a processor, what about the 4th Gen i7 4720HQ (2.60)?

I'm looking at a Gigabyte P37X and the rest of the specs are rockin, just not that part...

Thanks - T
