Is a fx-8320e $50 better than a fx-6300?

Hi, last year I updated my motherboard to a GA-990FX-UD3. I was tired of not having SATA3, USB3, etc. In hindsight, I wish I would have gone Intel, but I like my MOBO/machine and know I will be satisfied with upgrading the processor. Heck, my old Athlon II X3 455 is still fast enough for most things and well matched to my GPU.

I put some pricetrackers on slickdeals.net for both chips. It looks like the the 8320 is generally about $50 more than the 6300. I'm hoping to snag a 6300 for around $80 or an 8320e for just over $100. I'm thinking about waiting for Zen to come out to see if the AM3+ line of processors get discounted b/c I'm in school and not playing many games now anyway. Any thoughts on the best time to buy? I'd hate for the chips to go out of stock.

I've read in many places that the potential higher clock speed of the 6300 trumps the 8320e extra cores in gaming applications. I've also read that some people deactivate cores down to four cores when overclocking to try to achieve a higher clock speed. In spite of DX12 and 8 core consoles it doesn't seem that 8 core are going to be making a big difference in gaming for the foreseeable future. Please correct me if I'm wrong! I can't find too much current info on the topic. Although both the 6300 and 8320e are 95 TDP cores, I think the 6300 might be a bit more energy efficient, so I'd be saving green and being a little more green. I'm leaning toward the 6300.

With your GPU - you will be GPU bound in 99.9% of the games out there. There is no real need to get a 83xx if you do only gaming, with this GPU.

That's true, I'll upgrade the GPU when I get the CPU. The 250X and my rana chip are well matched.

How far is the Kansas City/Overland Park Microcenter from you? They have AMD FX 8320E for $100+tax.

Wow that's a steal! It's plenty close for me to drive.

I think it's safe to say the 8320e is $10 > than the 6300.

You've made this choice easy, thanks for the link!

100$ for this, thats really nice price there in the USA.
OP, get that CPU. For GPU, a used R9 290/x should be good for you. But you will need new PSU, those 450 will be running out of power. You should be looking for 550-650 good ones.

That's a good suggestion. Do you think I could avoid buying another PSU if I go with Nvidia? I've been eyeing the Nvidia 900 series.

Thanks!

I know TDP isn't the best measure of what will be required of a power supply because the amperage is probably more important. For whatever reason TDP is the easiest spec to find. It looks like the AMD cards range from upper 100's to 200's TDP and comparable NVIDIA cards are closer to 150-165 TDP.

I might just wait for new GPU's to come out like the Nvidia 1000 series.

Are 8 cores really > 6 for current gaming? For longevity?

There are tons of variables, but there are many games that benefit from going from x4 to x6 and a few that benefit going form x6 to x8 on the FX platform.

According to NewEgg your current PSU is max rated at 444w on the 12v rail.

444-125= 319watts overhead after CPU.

Considering R9 290X is ~300watts at peak I would consider:

A) A bigger PSU
B) A GTX 750TI or GTX 760.
