As long as the "average Joe" doesn't care or know, we will be stuck in this mess forever. I am sad to say that most people in any country has no clue on what is going on with politics, economics or what the government/companies does. Heck even in their own hometowns most don't know anything about whats going on. Then when you try to inform them, most of them will call you crazy. There is no hope for the majority of people, I am sad and sickened by how clueless most people are with everything.. Just want to slap some sense in to them!
It's a sad time to live in, and I see no end to it... We can't do much more than protect ourself and family/friends in any way possible, and inform people that are willing to listen. The government doesn't care for you or what you need/want, only for their own interests.
Then don't. Leave people to their ignorance, its not your job to inform the world, perhaps some people are happy about this ? ( maybe someone lol )
If you have people who are smart and will listen understand then more power to you and them. There will be a great technological equality divide soon, ( if there isn't one already ) where those who care enough to manage what products they consume and are selective in their reasoning ( i.e no mindless paranoia ) who hold a genuine understanding of the possibility of exploitation through ownership / configuration choices. They will be able to sleep just as easily as the ignorant but with the added knowledge they at least kept most of their life to themselves and not some suit in a city offices marketing department.
Technology is a double edged sword, it brings conveniences over quality in so many areas. However, there might actually be a win for IOT devices for those who fear the Internet & communication becoming more locked down and democracy being reduced through media censorship. If you take these ever more powerful small form factor devices in their billions in unsuspecting consumers homes it will be possible to create another encrypted P2P Internet (in theory). At the moment the rules are set punish those acting as an exit node even if they were not actually looking at the information as a way to reduce the use of such systems ( not sure if such people actually care ) but with a billion new IOT routers peer to peering on a smart net there is no way anyone will even be able to tell between the stream of real data and non real data ( unless encryption is entirely banned ) and punishing some affluent white middle aged couple who have no idea of technology because their fridge was acting as an exit node would be interesting to see in court
Double edged sword. it could actually benefit people who know about computers and networking .. which ironically is also going to be the biggest commercial growth industry .. lots of people.
