Gtx 970 on Q8400

Hey guys I'm currently running 2 gtx 590s in quad SLI and fps in black ops 3 and gta 5 suck. Fallout 4 is unplayable even at low it's in the 20s. I have a Q8400 over clocked to 3.2 ghz. I saw this benchmark where someone out a gtx 970 in a computer with a 2600k and compared it to a 970 with a 6700k. The results were surprisingly similar to one another. Being that sandy bridge only supports PCI express 2.0 like my cpu I'm wondering if I would net some gains ditching the old 590s and going with a modern GPU with my setup. I'm actually in the process of getting ready to build a new computer but if the $310 on a 970 can save me $1500 from buying a new one in going to do that in a hear beat. Advice? Thanks.

For those benchmarks you checked ,the core 2 quad isnt the best choice and the 590 scaling is poor, either due to driver support or vram

If you get an i5 2500k and some lga1155 z chipset mobo would be a big upgrade from the q8400,and you could get a r9 290 or gtx 970 depending on the budget

Thanks while that is something to consider I would rather go with ivy bridge 3570k for pci e 3.0 to use the potential of the gtx 970. Out the door with a dz77-50k its like $277 for the board and the cpu then I would want 16gb of ddr3 and the gtx 970 would end up being like $600-700. Hopefully that $60 board is a good over clocker with a K processor.

you wont get any performance difference from pcie 3.0 with a single card setup, maybe with dual gpus

you can find used i7 2600k which outperform a 3570k and wont need delidding for ocing

If you are in USA you could find a z68/z77 mobo for 55usd,16GB ram ddr3 for 70-60usd(new) and an i7 2600k for 150usd or so

Aso you can get an used 290 (same gpu as the 390 ) which with a slighly oc match a 970,for around 200usd
