Well yeah, different architectures. Pascal is derived from Maxwell. It's like Hawaii vs Fiji in terms of the degree of architectural changes. Perhaps going further by also bolstering the GPUs front end.

Volta is the completely redesigned architecture. One has to remember that Maxwell v2 was supposed to be what Pascal is but was canned due to 20nm issues.

So only half the changes were implemented in Maxwell V2 that we were supposed to see. Pascal now includes the changes we didn't get in Maxwell V2 due to 28nm space limitations.

So now we're getting an interim card between Maxwell and Volta. Stacked vram was added to Pascal rather than surfacing with Volta and Volta was pushed back.

See, Maxwell was supposed to offer twice the DP performance of Kepler. 20nm Maxwell was canned and we got a Kepler + some of what Maxwell was supposed to be. Pascal is now the card which will offer the twice the DP performance per watt. Pascal is the full 20nm Maxwell design + Stacked Vram.

Going to be funny to see your reaction if the GTX 1070 for $350 match your Gigabyte 980Ti which cost $650.
I will get two for almost the same price just to rub it in tongue.gif

Point is: Doesnt matter if we compare against GTX Titan X for $999 or GTX 980 Ti for $650. It will still be massive better value. Well, it better that is. Your card and the rest of the 28nm cards are outdated and should have been replaced ages ago

I seem sour? If anything, I'm supporting the assertion that a $350 GPU later this year can reasonably match "Titan X" performance by showing the transition is already long-underway since last summer where the 980 Ti already shaved off a third of the Titan X's retail price.

You're the guy who constantly jumped on new rumors as though they were fact, asserted 28nm everything is obsolete for the past year and that Pascal will release in early 2016 (despite reason saying that mid-range Pascal will launch first and therefore not thoroughly outclass the 980 Ti anymore than it did to its predecessor), and seemed pretty ticked off a couple pages back at having to settle for GP104 instead of getting GP100 this year.

I'm not being sour, I'm being realistic in both agreeing GM200 performance may drop down to 970 price range this year (citing how it already dropped to a much cheaper level than the Titan X), while also pointing out how flawed holding up the Titan X as an object of relevance to pretend a "1070" is even more value than it is, is. And if you're to accuse someone of being sour, find someone else who doesn't upgrade to premium quality products every year. I'm only upset GP100 isn't coming out sooner, couldn't care less about GP104 beating out the 980 Ti in value.

That's not what I mean criminal. I mean the jump to Titan X performance at $350 isn't as impossible or as grand as a leap as some people think. In absolute price, we're already halfway there with the 980 Ti that released a couple months after the Titan X.

780Ti owners that have good cards with high OC's, Titan and 780 owners that also have good cards volt mod enabled because

wont be that much slower either!
And frankly only lower tier card owners (770 and below and lower than 290 in AMD side), bencher's and people that like to

stay in the edge will buy these cards, but the vast majority that have 780Ti/Titan Black/Titan/780 wont upgrade because

they will loose $$$ in the process and get a good card but only up to AVERAGE (best case scenario) 20% more performance,

reflected in FPS its close to 16 fps AVERAGE (best case scenario) from GK110!

(AVERAGE PERFORMANCE) GTX980@1450mhz = TitanBlack@1250mhz = GTX780Ti@1300mhz = Titan@1350mhz = GTX 780@1450mhz
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

No soft voltmod for the GTX 970/980! The NCP81174 does not have support for I2C, all voltage control through driver up to

1,25V in Maxwell GPUs only!
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Red: Missing power phases (2)
Purple: 4 power phases for the core
Green: 1 power phase for the memory
Blue: Voltage controller NCP81174
Yellow: Missing capacitors and resistances front and back of card

Some of you might remember the GTX680 with a similar setting: Missing parts!
While this does not equate in bad performance in any way or puts the card in any harm, but it just leaves a bad taste in

your mouth after paying $$$ for your card...
If you intent to hard mod the card later on you probably will have to solder most of the missing caps! wink.gif

Its a wonderful card if you ask me: very fast, under water will be very cool, the Classified versions will be AMAZING!!!

it just leaves me asking a question: Where is GM210? tongue.gif
Just my 2 cents! thumb.gif

Well I`m not waiting for Volta either way. Hell no. Im getting my SLI build since GP100 isnt coming until 2017 and I`m gonna stick with those two until 10nm is here or whatever is next tongue.gif

I remember reading about Nvidia designed Maxwell for 20nm and had to redesign to 28nm because TSMC only eventually offered 20nm for low power.

As a 980ti SLI user and a member of the Habitual Upgrader Club... Bring on the new cards, I dont care that we just got the Ti's! biggrin.gif
post #107 of 457
Makes sense to go small first and then go for the large chip like they have done in the last 4 years. You can name whatever chip you put out "flagship", because technically there is no better card of that generation out yet. A small GP104 1080 card would be the high end card (until a better one comes out).

Nvidia knows their customers, they buy first then ask questions later and rebuy new cards if they are slightly better. I wonder how many people bought 680 -> Vanilla Titan -> 780 Ti / Titan Black -> Titan X.

The fear of not having the latest bundled with the upgrade itch is what puts a smile on Jen-Hsun Huangs face biggrin.gif

Yup!

As much as I love my Acer Predator with G-Sync, if GP100 to consumer drags feet too long, I will go Polaris with FreeSync. I will just let my son have this display, and take his 144 Hz 1080P and, I don't know, put it in the attic or something as backup.
