Need help spending some money

Thread Starter
I am building a new PC (see build list below) and will be using the Nemisis Black Ice 480 and 560 GTX radiators to cool the i7 5930k and 2x 980 ti. I can't decide between the NF-F12 iPPC 2000 or 3000 PWM fan (480 rad) or the NF-A14 iPPC-2000 or 3000 PWM fan (560 rad). I will be using the Aquaero 6 fan controller to control all fans in the case. I've checked the reviews and the reviewers (end users and tech reviewers) give these pretty high marks. Additionally, I've listened to sound test on you tube, but that can be misleading because of the various methods and quality of sound used, I am set on the Noctua fans, but not sure if I should go with 2000 and 3000 rpms. I plan to use a few as case fans, too. I just need to get some feedback from those that may have used both types and can provide some insight. I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks

CPU: 5930k
MB: MSI X99A Xpower AC??? (waiting on reviews of the new Godlike Carbon MB)

Not to be a killjoy but buying those Noctuas for rads is throwing money away. They are great for air sinks not so good for rads, Buy Vardars and thank me later smile.gif.

Not a problem. I want to hear all sides of the story.

Hmmm, interesting. A lot of the reviews that I've come across tested them on radiators and they've outperformed the competition, including the Vardars. I have a set of the Vardars (F3-120) and one thing that concerns me is they have a bit of a buzzing sound, even at lower rpms.

Can you explain why Noctua is not better optimized for radiators vs the Vardars?

According to the specs, the Noctua have a higher static pressure rating than Vardar and from all of my research, static pressure is the most important aspect of a fan to look for when it comes to pushing air through radiators.

Thanks for your input

120mm Fans:

Noctua iPPC - Static Pressure 3,94 mm H₂O (2000 rpm)
Vardar F3 - Static Pressure: 2.24mm H2O (1850 rpm)

Noctua iPPC - Static Pressure 7,63 mm H₂O (3000 rpm)
Vardar FF5 - Static Pressure: 5.81mm H2O (3000 rpm)

140mm Fans:

Noctua iPPC - Static Pressure 4,18 mm H₂O (2000 rpm)
Vardar F3-140 - Static Pressure: 3.15mm H2O (2000 rpm)

Noctua iPPC - Static Pressure 10,52 mm H₂O (3000 rpm)
Vardar F4 - Static Pressure: 5.28mm H2O (2500 rpm)

Out of curiosity where is this case going to be situated and what will you be using it for? ie are going to be in a little room with this beast for long period of time. Personally 1500rpm's is about my limit for when it comes to noise. I personally Think you would be fine with the 2000 rpm fans. It would be easier getting the 2000rpm fans to under volt to the noise profile you might find except able. Also, i dont think you need a 420 and 560. Id say you would be fine with a 280 and a 420 in a push pull but then again you do have to fill that massive case somehow biggrin.gif

Haha! I do have to fill the case and those radiators would be dwarfed in it. I don't plan to do push/pull - only push. This keeps me from having to have so many fans and those funds can go to other components in the build.

The PC will be located in the basement with plenty of room around it, but it does get warm now with my current build (see signature), but I don't like a whole lot of heat, so what's warm to me is perfect for others. When it gets too warm, I just open the window for a bit to cool me down; the PC is ok, it's me that gets hot. This PC will be used for a combination of things: photo editing and video stuff, gaming and your general works stuff - internet, word, excel etc.

Thanks for your feedback

You are most welcome,

Thinking about it some more (had my first cup of coffee smile.gif ) you would be fine using the 420 in just a pull configuration. So the 980ti use about 250ish watts each (500 total) a sr2 which is almost the same structurally as the gtx (just less fins of course) can dissipate around 450 watts at 1850rpms. http://www.xtremerigs.net/2015/10/03/hwlabs-sr2-420-mp-radiator-review/5/ Since you will have the gtx with its higher fin count and im assuming wont mind the fans actually getting to 2000rpms under load plus the other radiator it should be able to dissipate the heat of the total system just fine.

First things first, never believe manufacturer fan specs EVER! They are wrong, I dont know if they intentionally lie or its variances in testing equipment ect, but all of them are wrong. The best those numbers will do for you is help you compare in house fans (IE the SP of 2 fans from Noctua).

The Vardars win hands down for rads in the 140 department, in the 120 Department its a toss up, with GTs and Vardars. GTs are quieter and push a tad less air.

Anyways on to some data smile.gif

Both of those from, http://thermalbench.com/2015/08/11/ek-vardar-f1-140-140mm-fan/3/.

I can link other data points for 120s but we are talking about 140s right? so that will be about what you can find.

Another thing, do not listen to "Reviewers" they have strings and results are usually not accurate listen to testers. We have a few scientific testers in our field still. Martin left, however we still have Stren (ExtremeRigs), Bundymania (I think and OCN) and Geggeg (AKA VSG) (Thermalbench).

All that said Noctuas are not bad fans thats not what I am saying at all, I dont want you to think that is what I am saying. If you like the noctuas then use them just relize they are not the best fans for rads. They do have a huge fan base that would lead you to believe they are the best, they are no where close however.

Since you are employing a 560 and 480 rad in the same setup (I do not know why, I would and am going to build a STH10 as well with 3 560s smile.gif). I would advise Vardars for the 560 as there is no competition. On the 120s I would go with Vardars or GTs, GTs are quiter (or well have a different noise profile) and look pretty much the same.

Also part of the reason the Noctuas lose on Rads, is Noctua is a Air cooling company they make Air Coolers which there fans are great on. EK is a water cooling Company they make water cooling and that is it.

Thanks again for the feedback.

The reviews that I referred to are from testers that test the fans (show dba, static pressure at various fan speeds etc.) and not those unboxing sort of review; some on them on youtube, which I was able to get visuals. Thermalbench was one of the reviews I used, especially when I got my set of Vardars for my 360 radiator in current build. Those manufacturers specs are good even if not always true for getting the research ball rolling.

I checked those charts and noticed they are not comparing the Vardars with the Noctua iPPC fans; those are different Noctua fans. Nevertheless, I will revisit the Vardars. I want an all black fan for my color scheme and I may have to sacrifice some performance (albeit very minuscule) to get fans to match my color scheme.

Also, I see that EK recalled the Vardar 140 fans back in August/September. Are the Vardar 140 fans being sold now, the revised fans?

Btw, I am doing the 560mm for the 2x 980s and the 480 for the cpu. I don't want or need a whole lot of radiators at the moment. If I do install other radiators, it would be smaller ones. I thought about doing a 560 in the upper chamber, but I plan to install the Aquero 6 fan controller up there and the 560 would not allowed this. Basically, I'm going with what the case allows in terms of radiators.

Thanks again.

Ya I figured those reviews are the ones you looked at, Youtube that shows you IE Linus? Those reviewers are good for entertainment that is all. Most of them are endorsed and not recogniized by the people in the know in our industry. If someone is on youtube its safe to not believe a word that comes from there mouth.

I can promise you 100% no noctua in the history of noctuas have ever been good for rads, they are not designed for rads. Actual watercooling testers that matter, such as Stren, Bundy, Martin, Geggeg, ect. Those guys are not reviewers, when something sucks they will tell you this sucks. "Reviewers" wont do that as they do not want to lose there sponsor, they get paid by the makers most of the testers make nothing for there time and most of the products they test are donated by the community.

Also Geggeg does test the ippc fan, here

http://thermalbench.com/2015/08/19/noctua-nf-a14-ippc-2000-pwm-140mm-fan/3/

I could be wrong the iPPCs could really good, Just I have always seen Noctuas being touted as great and testers show something else. Lets ask @geggeg what he thinks if he isnt too busy smile.gif.

So in case you didn't know, that @ thingy has never really worked for me. Best to pm me for something. I just happened to see this thread so it worked out.

The Noctua NF-A14 is really good (retail and IPPC alike, and different from the NF-F12 which isn't as good for rads), just very expensive. Ditto with the NB eLoop fans I very recently added to the website. If you have a specific look in mind and money is not an issue, I don't have a big problem recommending them. But at $7-10 more than the EK Vardar fans, it's going to be a tough sell. I understand that the 140mm Vardar fans have been fixed now as well.
