Water flow difference due to...?

Hello all,

Rig is in sig, but the basics are that I'm running a dual D5 (serial) loop with 2x rads, CPU, GPU, and smaller 100ml res all 10/13 hard line tubing. Over the first few days of operation after building the loop, I expected to see some changes in temps and flow due to the air working out of the system, and everything stabilizing, which occurred.

The oddity from this, however, was the water flow. It began at about 195L/h and eventually settled into about 180L/h. (perfectly fine) It stayed this was for about a week and a half. Then one day I fire up my rig and it does it's usually climb to the top value except it stops at 165L/h. Over the next hour, the flow rate drops all the way down to my warning value of <160L/h. I was under the impression that this was due to (again), the air working its way out and perhaps it built up too much positive pressure inside the res. No big deal, I crack open the res and check the flow rate - no change. I top off the res with the Mayhems X1/distilled mix and the flow rate climbs to 196L/h. I allow it a moment to 'breathe' and there is no change in 10 minutes, so I cap it off again. It remains like this for the rest of my gaming session.

This morning I fire up the rig and it is sitting squarely at 178L/h again. I allowed the system to come up to temp (24.6C coolant temp) to see if the flow rate would change at all but it has not. Likewise, I popped the top of the res to see if any additional air would bleed off - nothing. It remains quite static at 178L/h.

So my question is - is this normal or does anyone have any insight as to what may be the cause. The system has been running for about 2 weeks and appears to be air pocket and microbubble free. This is a MINOR issue, as I'm quite pleased with my temps (3-4C deltas, local chip temps are excellent) and this may be completely normal. The D5's in question are both Varios set to 3.

Thanks in advance!

If the flow rate changes and the DeltaT or component temps do not change, I'd be suspecting the accuracy of whatever is reading the flow rate.

Thanks for the reply. Given the very low coolant delta-t and the rather miniscule flow range we're talking about (0.75-0.85GPM), I'm not sure I would have noticed much difference. I corrected the issue as soon as it came up, but you are right in that I should take more thorough metrics to determine where the fault is.

The flow meter in question is an Aquacomputer MPS400 connected to an Aquaero 6 Pro via high speed aquabus and using the standard 169 calibration value. Under normal operation, it provides a stable output and seems to correlate with actual throughput correctly (if I, for example, shut down, adjust, etc my pumps), but it could definitely be misreporting. I don't have another measurement tool, so I may just have to accept it as is. (again, it does 'seem' to be accurate given my loop and known pump characteristics)

Since my original post, I left my fill port on my res open for a few hours and it seemed to settle into 184L/h (+/- 1.5L/h), which seems about right. I capped it back off and it has remained there since. If this comes up again, I'll be sure to do some testing to qualify if there is an actual performance impact to the rest of the loop.

If you have only recently filled the system then the MPS400 accuracy can be affected quite a bit.

It requires that pretty much no air (ie. no tiny air bubbles) are present in your loop.

I'd give it a few days of running to ensure that the air is gone out of the coolant and then compare your flow readings.

The mps400 and the other Aquabus flow meters don't use the numbered calibration in the flow meter section. That setting only has an effect on the original mechanical meter that uses the flow port on the Aquaero.
Changes in flow reading on the mps is due to pressure changes in the loop. Not actual flow rate changes. Temperatures, the fill level of the res and so on don't affect flow rate.

Thanks, that was exactly what I was hoping to hear. I'm new to this type of flow meter, so I was hoping to hear that it was just normal sensitivity issues with a fresh loop.

Yeah, I just double checked it and in the MPS config, it is just using the calibration curve per the device preset. I was incorrectly reporting back the grayed out value in the Aquaero sensor page.

Thanks all!
