All specs i could find of the add-on card:
http://www.logilink.com/Produkte_LogiLink/Interface_Karten/Express_Karten/PCI_Express_Karte-2x_USB_30.htm

Specification: General:
• Chipset: NEC720202
• Compliant with PCI-Express Revision 2.0
• Full single lane PCI- Express throughput
• Fully Plug & Play and Hot Swappable
• Supports Windows XP/Vista/7/8.1/10USB3.0
• 2 Ports USB3.0 A female
• Compliant with USB3.0 Specification Rev 1.0
• Compliant with USB3.0 (5Gbps), USB2.0 (480Mbps), and USB1.1 (12Mbps)Specification
• Supports USB legacy function
• USB Bus Power/Self Power
• Supports External Power Socket in order to supply power for each USB3.0 Connector up to 900Ma Max/port

What DAC is it? Is it powered by the USB?

The other thing I forgot to ask is if the popping is at regular intervals.

This has me pretty stumped. I have several DACs and musical instrument interfaces and have never run into this myself.

This may be less related, but my HDPVR does not even work on my USB 3.0 ports. So maybe some kind of incompatibility(all my other usb 2 devices seem to work on the 3.0 ports).

I have an X-fi surround pro usb(I know I know, It lacked some features and was not used for long) that would pop and click on my front ports, but was fine on the rear ports and even on a 4 port hub.

I also have a Sound Blaster Omni USB that uses the same chip and it did not seem to have issues with the from ports so something has changed. Only thing I do not like about this thing is no natic 44.1k support(ALL my music is CD's so yeah). No audiophile here, my X-fi PCI-e sounds a bit better and has some features the usb cards lack.

I would move this card to usb 3.0 to test, but it does strange things sometimes like getting stuck at full volume or even having the max volume stuck at a lower level(only did this once).

Since the 3.0 ports clearly work well, I would just use the onboard ports since they work well and may well have a faster link to the cpu.

I also see the DAC seems to use 12 volts. so that rules out crappy usb power I would guess.

This DAC:

Powered by this PSU:

And yes the plops seem to come at timed intervals.

Yeah DAC has its own 12V PSU.
Next thing ill try is to disconnect my fan controller from the molex so the usb card is the only thing connected to it.

Others have used PCIE USB 3.0 cards with a NEC chip before to mod... maybe this one is just broken....

I can't help much in this situation, but what I can say is that the only time I've had problems with my DAC making clicking noises it was related to latency. Mostly because I run distributed computing at 100% CPU usage while listening to music. But I've read many posts on Head-Fi about too high DPC latency causing popping from DACs. You might want to check into that.

I tryed a few things today.

1. Disconnected all other stuff from molex so the card was the only one connected.
Result = Still hears pops about every 8 seconds.

2. Put the card on an external PSU, fully isolated from the rest of the PC. (only molex, not the 3,3V from PCIE slot offcourse)
Result = Still hear pops about every 8 seconds.

I got a feeling that the problem is the card itself.
Will see if i can get another one today or very soon.

I checked latency and my PC never come's above 1000us.
Without drivers its sits mostly under 100us all the time.

If latency was a problem i reckon i would have had it on the other ports to.

Thanks for suggestion though.

USB 3.0 does add extra latency I would run it off of a USB 2.0 port.

They all use USB 3.0 with a NEC chip for that. (Renesas drivers)
Supposedly that combination of chip, port and driver sounds the best.

I am highly sceptical but pre-modded cards like that cost between 349$ and 499$ !
So i thought to make one myself since its cheap and i like tinkering with electronics for a hobby.

But before i mod a card is has to work a 100% before even attampting that mod IMO.

Thursday/Friday i will get a new (exact same) card from the shop i buoght it from.
Hopefully this card i have here now is just faulty and the next one plays without pops.

DAC with external power?
I've only had issues with my powered sub. Had annoying "plops" that translated into hissing ~15min after powering it on. Replaced power cords from 2 pin to 3 and all was gone. Or other way around... can't remember now, it was long ago and am at work, can't check.

I am reminded of an issue I had with a workstation. While it seems totally unrelated, the symptom is actually very similar. We had one computer in a room with ~10 others that had an issue with the monitor having a fast rolling bar at 8-10 second intervals. Changed monitors, changed cables, changed power circuits, changed the tower and no change. Then I unplugged the USB printer and it stopped. Trial and error later, we wound up changing the printer power supply and all was fine. Just a thought.

Yeah DAC has its own external PSU.
3 pin power cords just mean protected earth, you dont have that with 2 pins.
I can do that but wont work, this house only has 3 pin sockets (sockets with PE) in the kitchen ;(

I could try offcourse on another PC and try with all other USB's disconnected.
Thanks for tip, will try tomorow.
