It creates user profiles on the server and simply copy's it to every computer you log into and sets up syncing so that changes made to files on one reflect on the others. This can include a whole host of settings and folder pairs. It can become quite messy in large domains but for a small network, I believe it could shine. The most complicated thing I think you may run into is setting proper permissions. I did it once, but not without help from a networking buddy of mine. First thing, I would read up on roaming profiles.

So what would you use on large domains then? It sounds just like what most schools use.

Yea, and it's a horrible idea that sets bad practices. It teaches people it's ok to save important data to the desktop or the user folder on the C drive instead of network drives or their network routed My Documents folder. When they login here, save a file and then see it on the next computer they log into they now believe the desktop is a safe zone. It's also a hassle to maintain because users profiles clutter up PC's and ultimately slow things down. Lots of businesses do not use roaming profiles anymore. Instead, AD scripts are used to simply map appropriate network drives and re-direct local user My Document folders to their personal network share.

I second the idea that roamers do not work in mass amounts. Thats how they have it at my university and our library is full of calculators because of how much crap is on them. I cant even login in less than 15 minutes and then attempt to open chrome to view anything.

Optimally this should work for a handful of users like you have but the better way would be the full domain controller. Also dont forget about cheap xeon cpus on ebay. I bought two E5 2670 from a company that flips data centers and the cpus work extremely well for almost anything plus they were $90 a pop.

No need to setup a domain controller unless you need it for a test lab. Easiest way to file share is setup a home group

File sharing is only part of what I'd like. Like I mentioned before, I'd also like to have the exact same experience logging onto any machine in my house, as any other machine. So things like settings, backgrounds, etc. would all transfer over on logon.

Then yes you will need a domain controller and configure roaming profiles if you want the same experience across all computers.
