Just ordered Crossover 324K monitor

Thread Starter
After deciding against using a 4K TV as a monitor I ordered a Crossover "perfect pixel" 324K monitor. This is for my production rig - it sees no games; just Adobe Creative suite and spreadsheets.

This is an upgrade from my Korean Shimian 27" IPS 2560x1440 screen, which has served me very well for a couple of years now. I'm a "one huge high-res" monitor type so I couldn't resist 4K now that prices are < $500.

I also ordered a Gigabyte AMD R7 360 GPU to gain a DisplayPort for use with this screen. My trusty old Radeon HD 7700 would likely struggle based on what I've read AND I want 60Hz.

I'll do some reviewing here once I get it, but in the meantime any recommended ideas or settings for using Win7 at 4K are appreciated!

Upgrade to Windows 10 for better hi-res scaling.

Not sure a large 4k monitor is so great for productivity. Triple screen, maybe UW is where it's at.

Problem I've noticed with my 43" 4k TV is even though I have a lot of space/res to work with, I still find the middle to be the best/most usable space.

For an example, this is how I have this page open on my desktop.

*Just noticed that is a 32" screen. Yea, that might work pretty well assuming the small text doesn't give you issues. Just those large 40"+ ones aren't very good for productivity. Great for gaming on though.

Interesting thoughts there, thanks!

At first I was considering a 42" 4K TV as monitor, but it wouldn't fit on my desk AND there were too many other downsides such as "just too big" like you hinted at. I searched for 4K monitors and found a gazillion 28" ones (which felt too small) and then found the 32" and thought it would be perfect for my needs. I have a 32" 1080p TV as my gaming rig monitor and it's about as big as I'd want a screen to be from my viewing distance of 3-4 feet.

When I web browse, it's one giant maximized window. I sit about 3-4 feet from the screen on my production rig also. Spreadsheets and Photoshop is where I think it's at. I have my browser at 120% zoom and may have to increase that.

I'll see how it all works and post my findings here. My 2560x1440 screen looks decidedly low res compared to my Samsung S2 9.7" screen with 2048x1536 res, so I definitely want something better and hopefully this 4K screen is it!

Cheers

For gaming I got used to this 43" in about a week and now it feels natural. In desktop I'm still using just the middle of the screen for everything.

I think the 32" is a good compromise as long as it's readable.

This is what the screen looks like if I just open up the max web browser. Excuse the crappy photo quality.

That's a lot of empty space. Windowed web viewing works out much better at 4k.

The monitor has arrived, and here are my first impressions:

1. Menu default was in Korean but it wasn't hard to figure out how to change it to English.
2. Default picture settings are crazy bright, I turned the brightness down.
3. Picture is incredible. Pixels are tiny.
4. There is one dead red stuck-off pixel bottom right portion of image, but you can't see it unless you're 6" from the screen. Not bad for over 8 million pixels!
5. The stand is glass, pretty neato! It's pretty solid too. Construction of entire monitor feels decent. The stand permits tilt adjustment but not height adjustment.
6. I set my browser to 150% zoom, and Windows 7 DPI scaling to 150% and everything is readable, not super tiny. I wouldn't want to go smaller than 32" @4K though, nor larger.
7. The new R7 360 GPU (this is a business rig, not a gamer) pushes the pixels just fine at 60Hz via DisplayPort. Google Earth is fun! Even spreadsheets are fun...
8. Scaling up 1080p content plays back fine full screen with no frame drops.
9. It's a matte finish screen, which I like.
10. Viewing angle is very good - though not as good as the OLED on my Samsung Tab.

I've only had it a couple hours; will post more as I use it and tweak things!!

One question, is text comfortably readable from three feet away without any DPI scaling?

I too figured a 32 inch monitor would be the sweet spot for native 4K res without the screen being too big or the text being too small. It's weird as to why there isn't a much bigger selection of 32" 4K monitors. Anyway, I'm trying to stay away from Window's scaling at all cost because it has always looked like complete junk to me - almost blurry i would say - even with as little as 125% scaling. For some reason browser zoom settings, in Chrome at least, doesn't have this quality problem, text has always looked great. I wish it did the same in Windows.

Thx

If you're 3' away then you'd be happy using a 40" 4k. 3' is about at the sweet spot for this 43" 4k. At 40" you have the same DPI as a 27" 1440p. A sweet spot for text without scaling.

You'd be amazed at how quickly you get used to a larger screen. First week I had mine I used my backup rig for a lot of day to day tasks, such as writing this. Now two weeks into it and my back up rig is back to spending most of its time sleeping.

^ I was afraid of that. I've sat down and played around with a friend's PC with a 42 inch 4K TV and I couldn't help but notice how far away I needed to sit from it to be comfortable. I figure that would be no problem for someone who has a huge desk and likes to play a lot of games and watch movies on their PC, but like Fastmhz, I use my PC more for production; MS Office, Photoshop, audio/video editing, etc, with limited space.

You get used to the size quickly. First week I was dizzy using it. Now, I've adjusted. I have a fairly large computer table. I had a bad habit of resting my elbows on it, or, moving my keyboard back and leaning into it with a controller. Now I sit back and straight up. How I should be sitting.

I think 4k is kind of an odd spot for productivity. Yea, you do get a lot of extra res, but, even you're dealing with a screen that's too small and scaling, losing the advantage of the extra res, or, a large screen that has a lot of spots that's too far out of your comfort zone. Still think that the best, most usable space on any monitor/tv is the middle.

One of the reason I picked up the TV I current have is I bought it from Walmart. I knew I could test it out and easily return it. Not a bad idea if you want to test a larger 4k out for a few weeks to see how it suits you. My plan now is to move this TV to my bedroom, and put one of those 40" Philips 4k monitors in here. Main reason for that is the lack of 4:4:4 Chroma at 60Hz 4k. The slightly tighter DPI will be nice also.

Without a doubt, you're going to want at min a 29.5" deep table/desk for this sized monitor/tv to work.
