Looking for a Laptop: Budget 2000

Thread Starter
What is your maximum budget? 2000 (+/- to some degree)

What country are you in?
USA

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Everything, Photo and possibly video editing, Gaming @ 120hz and/or 21:9 @ 1080p, Web browsing, Remote Support, Virtual Machines, potential for movies and such.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Alienware and/or Clevo (or resellers naturally)

What screen size do you require?
15.6 - 18.4

What screen resolution do you require?
1920x1080

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
Doesnt matter

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
Plugged in, so not a huge concern

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Playing various games, AAA that im interested in is The Division and R6 Siege

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Win7, Win 8.1, later Linux. Windows 10 is NOT an option I will consider

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Preferably something that doesnt scream expensive. I know, I got alienware in there lol.

How much hard drive space do you need?
512GB SSD with expand-ability

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
eGPU support USB-C or 980m SLI and also must have a 10-key/numpad

Is there anything else we need to know?
Windows 8.1 will likely be my last Windows based operating system due to the direction of the company in concerning my security. However I still like to play games and such for now.

I am very interested in the GA for extending the lifespan of the machine and also USB C for eGPU. If it doesnt have USB C then it must be the Alienware 18 R2, however I would like to have a new machine for a change.

Anyways with that mind I have been looking at 2 laptops

P650RG (preferred) and the Alienware 17 (because of the GA/USB C

I also have no need for NVMe if its more expensive than the SATA3 counterpart, as I will never pass the threshold to warrant its cost.

Ive been going back and forth on this for a while, now im looking on some other opinions.

Thanks!

I'll add to the fun of this one thumb.gif

I would do a lot of reading on the Alienwares if you are going to choose that one. I bought the Alienware 15 R2 a few months ago and I did really dig it, but It was a very hot running machine compared to all the ones I have had so far. the cpu would run around 85-90c while gaming for a while which was pretty hot to me. The gpu stayed a little lower but was in the 80's too. The lighting was what I really liked about it and how the trackpad lit up was very cool IMO biggrin.gif .. I had a lot of issues with the 2nd hard drive just disappearing on me about 4-5 times in the couple weeks of me having it. Out of no where it was just gone once I booted up. Then day or so later if would just show back up. I took the back off and unplugged it and replugged it in and that didn't do a thing, it was something in the software or hardware of the laptop doing this. I just couldn't keep losing my work files when I needed them at work so I had to take it back which bummed me out. I like that one better than both Asus's I tried and pretty much tied with the MSI I have now. The audio on it was pretty decent, still a little less than the MSI's audio, but FAR ABOVE the Asus's. The graphics amplifier was a very cool option and I was kinda pumped about that. I have a Titan X in my desktop now and that's where it was going as soon as I bought a new Pascal GPU when they come out. But since there are some other GA's coming out this year for all or other laptops, that still might be an option for my MSI down the road.

If you can get the Alienware and be lucky to not have any issues, I think you will really like that a lot. I wasn't really digging the 15.6" screen size personally since I don't have the best eye sight now after a work injury back in June of 2000. I have to wear a hard contact in my right eye now for good redface.gif . Moving up to the 17.3" size made a big difference for me especially when gaming. 18" would be nice too, just more to carry, but I don't think that would be much different than already carrying the 17.3" laptop HA.

If I can help answer anything, let me know. I will share anything I can thumb.gif

I'm not too terribly concerned with that but I'll keep an eye on the official Alienware thread to see if that's a common issue.

Did you repast the heatsink when you got it?

I'm discouraged from the A18r2 as the only reason I want it is for 980m sli and even if I get it working it's hardly a portable machine after that. I would have to do the 2x 330w mod to get its full potential.

That's the other thing worth noting. I want to be able to push what ever I get to the max, so I'll likely be getting a 330w psu and modding just about everything from cooling to bios if I can get the support.

I don't mind 15.6 it's easier to carry around but 17.3 really isn't too much difference to me.

The losing the 2nd hard drive was a common issue for quite a few. I read on it when it started happening to me, but there doesn't seem to be an answer really, or at least there wasn't when I was having the issue. If you can nail that down and figure out the issue then that makes it a lot nicer to own. Dell / Alienware's Tech support wont help you when it comes to the power supply needs of what WE WANT them for. I had the 15 R2 like I said and it came with the 180w psu, but to get full potential out of the gpu and cpu you needed the 230w psu, but they refused to give me one or say it was needed. Even when I said I wanted to just buy it as a second / backup they said they wouldn't help me and that I would then void my warranty if I was to use a higher power power supply, now how dumb is that lol. It's only going to pull what the thing pulls. Having a bigger power supply only puts less stress on it until you start to draw more power. For that subject, I would just go through sales and get the power supply you want and don't say more than you have to. They were total douches with me when I asked and said I wanted it because it was shown to improve performance when pushing the laptop further.

on the P650RG, I see that you can add the 6820K for $130 extra. If you are going to keep this laptop for a few years, I recommend getting that CPU. It's truly a BEAST man!! It beats my 4790K desktop cpu clock for clock by a good amount which is badass for a laptop cpu IMO. Pair that with a 980m and you will have a hell of a nice laptop that's for sure biggrin.gif . I don't have any experience with that brand tho so there's not much I can say about it. I can only vouch for the hardware that you would choose if I have had my hands on it.

I've tested the 6700HQ and the 6820K quite a bit and can say the 6820K is a good 25% faster. It's a very cool running cpu at least in my MSI setup. I haven't had any need to re-paste my MSI since the temps are so good as is. Oh, and that's also a no that I didn't re-paste the Alienware either. There was a good amount of stuff to take apart in the 15 R2 to do a re-paste job, but if I was to keep it for good then I would have went through that little bit of trouble. I'm sure the 17 R3 or 18" versions have a good bit better cooling since they are bigger machines and have the room. The 15 R2 was pretty cramped TBH with what they stuffed inside.

One thing I didn't like tho seriously about the Alienware's was how much ribbon cables there were once taking off the back cover. Everything was connected with a ribbon cable and that's just something I don't personally like. To some that might not be a bother. Just something to point out.

I'd like to know a little more about the P650RG tho, that seems to be a pretty slick laptop.

Asus G752

Is literally at your budget limit and has everything you wanted.

Personally, I think this would be the best choice, though I'm still skeptical about Asus after their huge Customer Service fiasco a few years ago...

If I'm going to trek through the desert on one laptop for the rest of my foreseeable life, it can't be BGA ...everything needs to be removable/replaceable/...GPU MXM upgradable.

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np9778-clevo-p770dm-p-8625.html

Going with i5 6600k will just about let you get what you want with a 970m 6GB or a 980m 8GB and you'll have to deck it out after-market to stay in your budget now.

...plus there's Prema for modded BIOS/vBIOS.

If you were to consider the G752, I HIGHLY recommend you look into the Bios updates and ask some people that have it if Asus has fixed the issues with the NVMe drive support. The bios's were locked in Raid mode and couldn't support the NVMe drives at all. Couldn't even install the correct drivers for them. You only get 1x 2.5" drive bay, and 2x m.2 PCI-E NVMe drive slots, there is NO sata3 m.2 slots at all. I know you aren't particular to the NVMe drives from things I've hear you say, just wanted you to be fully aware of that if that model was a consideration. Also, the audio is HORRIBLE on those, I mean the worst I've ever heard on a laptop. If you choose this one, I will send you the speaker I bought that clips on the top of the monitor that I bought for it, you can have for FREE LOL tongue.gif .. You'll need it.

After seeing lots of other options and getting a MSI personally, I would look else where really than getting the G752's. They are not built that great IMHO. I feel Asus really went south with this line, and big time coming from the G751's last year. The G751 was a way nicer laptop build IMO. I don't really think you would choose this model tho from getting to know you some. It's just not very "TheReciever" ish biggrin.gif

Yeah I really want gpu upgradability or eGPU potential like greatsquare has mentioned.

What is in that arena of 17.3 with at least 6820k and MXM?

For some reason pics aren't loading on my phone for xoticpc so I'll have to check it out later when I get a chance

The thing that I don't like about the Asus is the keyboard style. It's for that same reason I can't go with an msi option. I believe they call it chiclet?

It was one thing I didn't care for on the y510p lol

If budget needs to increase then that's fine, got the sign off from the old lady because I plan to make this laptop last long as it can lol.

What do you guys think of the p650rg? Bga aside

It was one thing I didn't care for on the y510p lol

If budget needs to increase then that's fine, got the sign off from the old lady because I plan to make this laptop last long as it can lol.

What do you guys think of the p650rg? Bga aside

Well have you considered the MSI GT80 then maybe? That has everything MXM even the cpu I believe. That has a actual "Mechanical" keyboard in it, not a laptop keyboard or chic-let style? You keep saying you want a MSI but don't want a MSI lol. Meaning the upgrade-able MXM's. The MSI's keyboard is really nice tho bud, seriously. Way nicer than the Asus's keyboard. Steelseries has done a great job in the MSI's layout. Are you really that against the chic-let style? These GT72's are really a nice machine as far as all the options you get.

You get the 6820K, MXM GPU, 2x 2.5" drive bays, 2x m.2 Sata3 drive slots, 2x m.2 NVME PCI-E drive slots. You can install 6 hard drives just the way it comes, If you wanted to not put a 2.5" hard drive in and put an adapter for 2x m.2 drives in the 2.5" bay, then you could do 8 hard drives, and also pull the DVD drive out and put another one of those adapters and have 10x m.2 drives in ***** kookoo.gif just sayin lol

Aren't the Clevo's a MSI build without the MSI brand on them? Or the one I seen looked exactly like the MSI.

The Alienware had the next best keyboard that I liked, it was really nice, but I didn't like the layout of the 15 R2 because no number pad on the side which then they centered the keyboard on the laptop and put the WASD keys way to far in the center of the laptop and made it really uncomfortable for gaming IMO. The 17 R3 looked to be way better layout, but the way that keyboard was it's not the chic-let style and was pretty nice to type on TBH. I did like typing on it a lot. I almost think if I got the 17 R3 instead of the 15 R2 that I may have ended up keeping it if it didn't lose the 2nd hard drive like I was having the issue with mine. The 17.3" screen would have been nice, the bigger shell should have had better cooling capabilities and quieter too. I almost went back to the Alienware 17 R3 after not wanting to keep the Asus G752, but said I'll give MSI a try just because they had Dynaudio speakers in it and I know how insane the quality is with that company. I was completely right too after getting it and hearing it that's for sure.

EDIT:

I do like that P650RG except for it not having dual rear exhaust vents and one being out the side. I guess that's not too bad as long as it's not loud. I would think you'll hear it a bit more going out the side especially if you are cooling a 980m and 6820K, but maybe it's totally fine.

I just priced one out on iBuyPower.com http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/Battalion-P650RG-Gaming-Laptop not sure if it will have the options I choose, but not bad.

I went with 6820K with G-sync 1080p display, no 4K no way on a laptop IMO. Went with 16gigs of DDR4 2400mhz which was same price as 2133mhz so why not. Didn't choose a m.2 drive because they are asking to much for the 950 Pro's ($233 for 256gb when you can get that for $169 at Microcenter) , so I just choose the 1tb 7200rpm mechanical drive for storage purpose and lower price. I'd be pulling out for a 1tb Samsung 850 Evo personally but that's me. Has the 980m. Has pretty much all you need for being a badass gaming machine and total price with the specs I said was $1871.. Seems that you could get so much more from starting out with the GT72 Barebones at $1163 and work up from there and have a 6820K and 8gig 980m or even 980 desktop version for around the same price. I know you are against the MSI's but just has the options you want LOL tongue.gif
