[Build Log] "The Edge of Sanity" Caselabs s8 (upgrade in progress)

Thread Starter
Introduction
I, like many other people on this forum, have been building systems for a long time but had never water cooled a pc before. It is something i have always wanted to do. I have been building systems for over 10 years now. Whether they are for myself, friends, family, or businesses its something i do on fairly regular basis.

This build log will be a timeline of the trials and errors that i go through while building my first high end watercooled PC. I learn fast and have ambitious plans but there will be some pain along the way as it is a learning experience. The build is more about the experience of getting to the end than the finished product. One day it'll be finished and i'll be itching to build something new.

Great build! Caselabs cases are just pure awesomeness.

But yeah, I think the Formula will do the best because well, the color scheme is nice (also rgb!), great overclocking features, solid Asus build quality and 3/4Way sli is a little bit absurd so don't worry about that (also 4 way using Plx chips isn't the best option).

yeah i'm with you on the color scheme, overclocking abilities, and the plx issue. The more i think about going tri sli the more i think i should just sell my skylake stuff and go x99. I actually have a maximus viii formula on backorder from amazon right now. Hopefully they don't get them back in stock for another week or two so i can take advantage of their return policy if i get a bad board. I won't be able to test it until mid March. I have not had great luck with asus products in the past, i think their quality control is awful so i have my reservations about ordering one of their mobos. I've been building strictly with gigabyte for a long time now and have never had an issue with their products.

Finally got around to opening up my latest ppcs order to take a look at everything today.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
First we have a big bag of fittings

Mostly filled with these little guys along with a few 90s, some drain valves, a couple pass throughs, some temp sensors, a multi port res top, and some Q fittings. All EK and bitspower stuff.

I think i bought enough tubing to build this rig 4 or 5 times over lol, because i probably will. Also need some practice tubing since bending hardline is new to me.

Some random cables, an EK ram block and heat spreaders, mayhems pastel ice white extreme, some pcb splitters for the 11ty fans i have, and some more gelid thermal paste since i'm about out

.
My third EK XE rad, currently in the shake and rinse process of getting the gunk out. I'll be buying a pond pump and filter soon so i never have to do it again. Such a horrible waste of time.

And the crud from the first round of 50/50 distilled white vinegar and hot tap water shake. Hard to see the filth here because of the chemical reaction causing the green color.

Here is the crud that sunk to the bottom of the bowl. People think alphacool rads are dirty, these are far worse from my experience.

Successive flushes with less vinegar.

Unfortunately this order did not come without its issues.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
First we have a few pieces of damaged tube. All of them are the longer 1000mm pieces and the damage is on the ends. It was inevitable with the amount that i ordered. No point in rma'ing it, i'll just cut the ends off and use the cracked piece for practice. Tube is cheap.

The second problem was with the monsoon bending kit i ordered. The mandrels were in seriously bad condition. The anodized finish was chipped and scratched all over every piece, even in the bending lanes. They look like someone took them, threw them on a rough concrete floor a few times, then packaged them up for sale. The rest of the kit looks brand new. Fortunately ppcs has good customer service and got it sorted with monsoon. New set of mandrels are being mailed to me tomorrow from monsoon. Not sure how the hell this happened.

Small update for today. I cleaned up the OP so you no longer have to scroll through my rambling intro and other irrelevant stuff. Also updated the how the build started and upcoming build changes sections as well to be a bit more focused on what i hope to accomplish. The UPS man was good to me the past couple of days as well.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
My caselabs 36mm extended ventilated top showed up

I also had a maximus viii formula on backorder from amazon. Was hoping they would stay out of stock a bit longer so i could have some time to decide on what mobo to buy. Probably would have been this anyways. Looks like a pair of Pascal Titans are in my future to compliment 144hz ultrawides when they become available. I can always return it if someone wants to convince me to buy something else.

I have been feeling a bit better the past few days so i decided to take advantage of that and swap out my gigabyte gaming 7 mobo for the new asus maximus viii formula that showed up last week. Didn't take a whole lot of effort, didn't even need to drain the system thanks to the cl s8 mobo tray design.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Unmounted the gpu and suspended it above the mobo using zip ties

Mobo is out, supported the gpus with a phone book on the mid plate

Out with the old

M.2 drive cover removed and m.2 ssd installed. Its a goddamn travesty that a $400 board has only 1 m.2 slot. Would have loved to raid 0 a pair of these m2s at some point. My current 512gb m2 just isn't enough, game sizes are getting too big. What was asus thinking on this one. doh.gif

6700k all cleaned up and ready for its new home

Applied thermal paste using the new spatula thingy included with the new tube of gelid extreme i bought. I did a piss poor job of spreading the paste because it dried out too fast. Very uneven with poor coverage in areas. The dry climate made the paste dry out in seconds while spreading it. Figured my temps would be terrible. Turns out they're 5-7c cooler during stress testing with 7mV higher voltage vs the gaming 7 at the same clocks.

Asus board in its new home. Again, i apologize for the lackluster cell phone pics.
Overclocking is definitely taking some getting used to on this platform. So many things to play with. Far different from the clunky yet simplistic gigabyte bios design. Its my first time in 10 years using something other than gigabyte for one of my builds.
Unfortunately i can no longer light up the gpus with leds due to the armor around the pci slots. I'll have to drill some holes later on so that i can place leds back in them. Somewhat similar issue on the cpu side in that there is no where to hide the led cables for the cpu block and eventually the ram block i will be using. More drilling will be needed on that side as well.

The gaming 7 all boxed up and ready for sale.

I have been having some issues with stability while folding lately and it has all been related to ram. I discovered my ram essentially sits in a dead spot for airflow if i run the fan profile i prefer for low noise levels. This leads to high ram temps and eventually instability even at rated speeds and voltages. Living at 10,500ft in elevation means air cooling doesn't work worth a damn anyways. I ended up having to point two 120mm case fans right at the ram as a temporary solution. This meant having unmounted case fans just laying on top of components, not a fan of doing that for any length of time.

I decided that i need to get the ram on water to put an end to this problem once and for all. I had planned to do it in a few weeks will the full teardown and rebuild but i don't want to wait. I'll be draining the system tomorrow and bending some of the first tubes for ram and vrm cooling. Rest of the loop will remain soft tube for a bit longer.

Today i mounted the EK monarch ram heatspreaders.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
After looking at a few guides on how to pull the stock heat spreaders off i set to work. I used a heatgun to get them hot enough to pry off. My first attempt didn't go as well as i had hoped. I managed to damage a couple pins on the ram while prying off the heatspreaders. Hope this doesn't cause any problems. redface.gif

Thermal pads are the most evil invention of all time. I hate them so much. Had to cut them all down to size. Ugh.

I tried applying thermal pads to the rear without the chips, not thick enough for the ek spreaders.

So i doubled up the thermal pads, i have tons of these things laying around from various ek parts so why not waste a few. Still not thick enough.

Ended up salvaging the stock sticky foam and put it back on. Fortunately i didn't damage it to badly when i removed it. This solved the problem.

New ek heatspreader finished and installed.

This is what happens when you don't perfectly align the second piece of the heatspreader. Have i mentioned my utter hatred for thermal pads?

Finished, will it boot? Expecting Q code 55 here.

Success! Ram now runs 5c cooler on air during folding.

My first acrylic bends start tomorrow. Started practicing last night. The monsoon mandrel kit is pretty sweet now that i understand how to use it.
