I just don't like gaming anymore...

Thread Starter
I use to play hours a day and never get bored, but I'm 29 years old now and it's rare for me to enjoy games anymore. I honestly blame WoW, which gave me a bad mindset for gaming due to playing it extremely hardcore for many years. I haven't played it in about a year, and my gaming appeal just never returned.

There's very few exceptions. I'll play something like D3 when a new season comes out because it's an extremely forgiving game that doesn't really any thought process. I played Witcher 3, and enjoyed it, but that's mainly because I played TW1 so much when I was younger. I still treated it more as a "chore" than a game though, and getting all those treasure locations in the ocean really sucked for me. The only game I really actively play and enjoy is heavily modded Minecraft. Which again, is more like a chore than a game. I'll fire up a emulatior and play like Zelda OOT and have a blast, probably because it's something I played a lot as a young child. Then I'll try something like Zelda Wind Waker or Majora's Mask, and be bored out of my mind because I have no previous connection to them, when they are more or less the same type of game.

I'm extremely OCD when it comes to min/maxing and 100% completion, so complex games become a nightmare for me. I regularly stop playing games if I feel I missed any content, I have to search every inch to get any possible enjoyment (which is tedious). I've never beat a bioware-type game in my life due to this, despite trying to play them dozens of times. I've tried to break this mindset, but it's just not possible. It's not as simple as "just don't do that", because if I don't I will lose interest in the game within minutes and if I do it, then I burn myself out well before completing it.

Game's like Skyrim and Fallout seem extremely interesting to me, infact I beat Skyrim the first week of release and enjoyed it but now that there's so many mods it's far too overwhelming to try to get back into any Bethesda game. I've tried many times. My mind refuses to play without mods, I keep telling myself "I'm missing so much stuff", and end up burning myself out. On the other hand, playing with mods is overwhelming to setup, and generally leads to something breaking, so I end up quitting.

Divinity Origin Sin is a game that is given so much praise, and I've tried playing it 3 times. I just find myself overwhelmed because I try to perfectly min/max every character and it's literally impossible. Still have never gotten past the first act in this game, despite it seeming very interesting. All typical party-RPG type games do this too me. Pillar of Eternity, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, etc. I feel like they are all extremely good games, but I constantly am in a mental battle with myself while playing them.. so I end up giving up. Most of them I won't even make it past character creation.

Multiplayer quick-match type games (Counter Strike, Hearthstone, etc) simply don't appeal to me because it seems completely pointless. You do a bunch of repetitive matches against other people. It's not fun at all for me.

I've google for ages for games that might peak my interest, i've tried mostly all of them, and very few of them hold my interest for very long. I've even tried going back to the early days of 90s gaming, but I'm always bored out of my mind because I just don't seem to enjoy it anymore. My free time generally consist of sitting at home watching movies or TV shows, which again feel more like a task than entertainment. This is basically how I feel about everything anymore...

I feel like there's no forms of "entertainment" that I actually view as "entertainment". Nothing is fun anymore. Anyone else feel like this?

I felt the same way until i fallout 4 came out. But most of the time games don't really interest me anymore. And a lot of titles are just the same old thing over and over. Bad console ports and stuff too make me stray away from games.

Some days I log in and realize i have no interest in playing, and log right back out.

I've been through this. I end up usually taking 3-6 month breaks in between gaming in order to not burn out so often. Its usually enough time for a game I've wanted to play to either, get patched and be playable, mods being released, a drop in price, or all three. What really helped is picking up a side hobby completely unrelated to computers/games. I feel your pain.

I usually play games because I have nothing better to do with that time.

It is not often that I play a game because I really, really want to.

Save for a few titles in the past handful of years, I'm the same, just can't be bothered.

A game of CSGO after dinner or so, that's about as much gaming as I need in a day. And if I do it every day it bores me either way, lol

And then you have the pcmasterrace elitist rubbish. Come to think about it, except FO4 (up until the Institute, after that I pretty much quit the game) and GTA V (Online) the other only games in the last couple of years I have lost the sense of time playing are the Bayonetta series and the Wind Waker HD remake (all three on Wii U).

I had a similar experience with WoW. I played as a teenager (I'm 23 now) from Vanilla through the end of Cataclysm and was a fairly accomplished player and an officer in a very decent progression oriented raiding guild. I had several characters with full best in slot gear by the time I left that game. After how seriously I took WoW nothing else really seemed to compare to that. Having a massive Steam library of 1000+ games and nothing to play feels a bit like having a pantry full of food and nothing to eat. I'll sometimes get to a point where nothing sounds appealing anymore. That's usually when I'll take a long trip around the country just to collect myself and figure out what I want to do next. I have a very flexible job (and work for myself for the most part) and a ridiculously fuel efficient diesel VW Jetta wagon so I can get away with just leaving for California on a whim and sleeping in the back of the car for 2 weeks.

Every time I'm about to give up on PC gaming something gets my attention for a while. I loved Dying Light and I'm excited to play the new stuff for it. Borderlands 2 and the DLC for it have been excellent. I've had a few friends get in to ARMA 3 and Planetside 2 and Rocket League, all of which have been really fun for me. Still I feel like I spend far more time building and tinkering with this ridiculous machine on my desk than actually playing things on it. Nothing has captivated me or made me want to dedicate so much time as WoW did years ago and I know exactly what you mean about that ruining gaming for you in a way.

Once I get in to a game and decide I like it I usually don't have trouble finishing it. The problem happens for me between games when I will play just a couple of minutes of something before deciding that there is something else I would rather be playing and I tab out to try that, then tab out to try something else, then get distracted by the internet, then go to edit some photos, then go to look at some hardware, and it's just this cycle where it takes me a bit to really get down to focus on something. It's so frustrating when you look forward to playing something in your free time but then once you actually have the time to play it you can't be bothered. Oh well, these days I seem to focus more on hardware and building things for other people to enjoy. I live vicariously through their games lol

Feel the same sometimes. I am a completionist and play similar games. If the games take too long to complete I typically burn out halfway (Fallout 4, Witcher, Divinity, Attila Total War etc)

The only game at the moment that has me coming back for more is Hex Shards of Fate http://www.hextcg.com It is an online trading card game similar to Magic (very unlike Heartstone which is far too simple for me) that has both PVE and PVP. I mainly play the PVP, gives me a lot of satisfaction beating human opponents in a deep strategy game that doesn't require you to have 200 APM to be competitive. Honestly haven't enjoyed a game like this since playing the Original Everquest.
