I just don't like gaming anymore... - Page 17

I'm 36 and I can still enjoy games just as much as I did 20 years ago. I don't play them as much as I used to since I do have other stuff going on. I'm on my last year of grad school so I'm busy finishing up my research and prepping to write my thesis, so I don't have that much free time. The free time I have is spent learning how to code to write a program to control my led strips through an Arduino Uno, which has been taking up all of my free time (I'm just about done though). However, I do really want to jump back into The Witcher 3 and continue it, as well as finish up Xenoblades 3D.

Sometimes I do get burned out and just don't feel like playing, but that eventually ends and I start up again. It'll last a few weeks, or even a few months, but sooner or later a game comes out that draws me back in.

Ive gone back to older games pre 2010. Right now im playing Star Wars Pod Racer pc version (i always wanted this with an N64 when Ep1 came out), Burnout 3 takedown on PCSX2 and NFS Underground series (so much better than anything new from EA) and having a blast.

Next im starting the NOLF series as ive never played them before. RTCW is a timeless classic imo and with texture mods still looks great.

Im finding games around year 2010+ are just lacking in any real substance. They simply dont make them like they use too.

I've gone back to BFBC2...lol There's still a bunch of people that play, I'm still trying to get to level 50..lulz and I like testing out 4k DSR for the game...hehe it actually tasks my GPU pretty good...

Still think the sniping in BFBC2 is far better than any BF3 or BF4 sniping... Just feels much more realistic/natural/easier

Im stuck in the same rut of no longer enjoying games. With the exception of Civ V and sins of a solar empire rebellion (now that it's on GoG) I really haven't played much in the last few years. My desktop has sat dormant for about 1 year now.

I think a big part of it was being exposed to life. I was a huge nerd, loved games, but lived in a tiny farm town with nothing to do, no stores, and no friends throughout my school years. So I always gamed.

In junior year, I went to a trade school instead of a normal high school. It was my first taste of something outside of that farm town. And it was great. Over time, as I get more exposed to the ways of life outside of that farm town, I've played games less and less now. I have a full time, steady job, I live on my own without others telling me how to live, and for the first time, I have a group of friends that actually want to hang out. We play board games and Pen and paper RPGs for hours on end. Once that happened, my drive to play games vanished.

And since I've gotten a job in professional IT, my love of PC gaming has...stopped. I still love PCs, but I like sitting down and playing a game on a nice comfy couch. Combined with the way modern games are going, and my PS3 has seen much more use then my PC+PS4 combined. Which still isnt much. Perhaps it's just digital overload, after working on machines all day and being connected with the world 24/7 with a smartphone, I just want to sit down with a physical book, or work on building models, with no assistance from computers whatsoever.

As someone going into game programming, there's a lot to consider on why people 'burn out' on gaming. I have been playing games since Wolfenstien3d was new (yea...im old). I have had burn out periods and stoppages and keep coming back.

In one book I read (Theory of Fun: Computer Games) the author points out that fun comes from challenge. Learning something new, especially when there's a reward, tends to be fun for people. In the terms of computer games, its usually the challenge of learning a game system. Graphics will get a player to start the game, but it wont carry the game very far. As a result, modern games that focus on being pretty do well in sales, but poor on longevity.

Burn Out is complicated. I tended to binge on a game until I was sick of it. Eventually I did that with a lot of games and became burned out on gaming. Then had to wait a while until I wanted to try again. Just to binge and burn out again. From my perspective, its the binging that ruins games (other than the focus on making them pretty)

Remember that because one genre that used to be fun isnt anymore, others may be. I used to play multiplayer shooters exclusively, but cant stomach that genre anymore. I can do single player fine though. People change opinions on whats fun, especially as we age and gain experience. Which goes back to the 'challenge' aspect. Trying new things can itself be fun simply because its a new challenge.

Coming off a MMO you've been playing for years is a weird experience. I'm sure a lot of people would just move on to the next thing. But after 7 years of being so invested in FFXI, finding that I didn't enjoy it anymore was intensely depressing. I tried really hard to find something else to fill in that gap. Never did find anything really.

OP i'm 28 and totally understand your post.

Personally, gaming is what I do in my free time. I moved to a new area (Los Angeles.) because of a family health issue-- and after 2 years I still don't really know anybody so gaming is totally a way for me to relax every now and then. It is also hard to "get in the mood" as you pretty much describe-- but the battlefield games, SQUAD, and a few others keep my satisfied.

Exactly what happens to me. I start up any game, play for 5 minutes, and ask myself why i am playing if i didnt really want to play in the first place and get off the pc right away. Its sad since im only 20 and i was an avid gamer in my teens years.

I only play games extensively when a new game comes out. For example, the recent blood and wine dlc for witcher. I played it nonstop since it released, and now that i finished the dlc, havent touched witcher 3 and im back to that same mentality. Same going to happen to other games i love like dishonored 2, play it nonstop until i finish the game, then dont touch the game after that.

It's been hard for me to enjoy any game as much as I enjoyed Halo 3 and Team Fortress 2 in their prime years. I'm hoping Overwatch can bring that excitement back for me, but I don't even have internet anymore biggrin.gif
