Would this make a good server?

Current gear:
AMD 640 propus
2x2bg ram for 4GB total
no gpu at all
giant case
crappy 680w psu by apevia
1x 80gb sata
1x 80gb IDE
1x 200gb IDE

Looking at:

(Still undecided on drives, but I can use 1 from my current machine)

I can currently run a VMhost with only 2 servers on it right now
VM1 has ubuntu server all 4 cores available and 3gb ram
Arma 3 server
cs go server
minecraft server (altho this loads really slow for whatever reason, for huge modpacks anyways)
TF2 server
7D2D

Those are some game servers I can run, but usually one at a time because of ram limit.
Currently running none, but still want to get a better arma 3 server going.
(It can run all these servers pretty well, but getting a audience is the problem)

Then on the other vm host, it runs on 1 core 128MB ram, Debian.
Runs proxy and file server, and runs it several times better then my ubuntu VM ever did, when I had it.

Well I guess the main things I'm worried about is the cpu of how few threads it has. Benchmarks say it is faster then current cpu, but still worry. Then there is ddr4, I wonder if I should be upgrading to that, from my ddr3 server.

Then kinda OS? I wonder how compatible this newer stuff will be. I've only ever made servers from gear that is 3+ years old, so the linux distro has had time to make drivers n stuff for it. Then, still on OS, I do like ubuntu server, but I've allways had this curiosity about debian, and when I got it on my VM, it was overall so much faster. I'm thinking about putting Debian as the main OS for the server and maybe stop doing a VM host also.

Thanks,

I wouldn't worry about age.... some people are running on stuff nearly a decade old. rolleyes.gif

Well I'm mainly worried about this newer gear not having good drivers or what not and having a gbit NIC that runs in 10 or 100mb speed.
Or maybe having 0 support for this chipset yet. (Not exactly smart with this part of computers)

Then should I be going with ddr4 over ddr3.
I mainly want to build a new server, because I need more ram, and would like to attach a ssd to the build in post #1.
The psu is really bad... Spits out heat and I assume it's eating power because of that. I could probably just swap that and add more ram, but I would like to be even more power efficient. Newer cpu is about half the watts and I think it would overall be way more quiet with that psu and smaller case. Smaller mobo, ddr4 is said to be more power efficient I think I read somewhere a while ago.

But yeah... I don't want to end up building a sever that has basic ish software.
