I know the OP is strictly about VR but I am more so arguing against your earlier, more broad statement that you can have a CPU bottleneck at high resolutions. With the state of current GPU development this is simply not true if you have even a halfway decent CPU (sure you can create a bottleneck if you use a Pentium or some crap but come on). Current video cards are simply not strong enough to create significant CPU-bound situations at 1440p or higher.

Now as it applies to VR I can see your point somewhat as you're right in saying that frame rate will be more important to the typical VR customer than is resolution and at 1080p you can certainly create CPU bottlenecks with higher end GPU's but that was never what I was arguing against in the first place...
