Suggest a cooler with am3+ backplate? - Page 2

With your motherboard only havng about 48mm from center CPU toward RAM socket you need to be careful to get a cooler with fan than is less than that. Motherboard does have about 76mm center CPU toward PCIe socket.

Why do you need cooler to mount in both orientations? Isn't cooler mounting front to back with less than 48mm from center of CPU to front of fan is the critical issue? Very few coolers are less than 48mm center CPU toward side of fin pack.

Cryorig H7 is one that will fit. behind RAM. H5 Universal too

And if you want even better, R! Universal will also fit.

Pretty sure the all come with AMD back plates. and mount facing front to back.

Thanks for finding those measurements!

I am open to mounting the fan in pull or raising it over the ram.

The reason is to be able to mount the motherboard with ports facing up. In that orientation the fan on a tower cooler that does not support changing orientations would be horizontal, resulting in increased fan noise and shortened life.

Is the socket height the same between Intel/AMD?
From the drawing I'm getting:
8mm from top of CPU/bottom of cooler to motherboard surface/bottom of RAM slot
3mm from motherboard surface/bottom of RAM slot to bottom of RAM stick

Edits for dimensional references:

- can subtract total of 5mm from RAM height for compatibility comparisons

My own measurements of motherboard (Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7) with a cheap ruler:
49mm center to ram (will use your 48mm to be conservative)
76mm center to pcie

Couldn't measure the socket height. I will assume I can subtract 4mm from the RAM height.

I have a huge collection of dimensional drawings that I have edited and added measurements to. wink.gif

49mm & 76mm is what I actually measured on drawing. thumb.gif
I also have a big collection of motherboard clearance drawing. tongue.gif

You have the RAM height / clearance backwards.
RAM socket raises RAM 3mm
RAM height + 3mm = bottom of fins to motherboard.

Impressive! thumb.gif

Sorry for the wrong terminology, I used 4mm instead of 5mm to be conservative when checking RAM compatibility.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: *AMD FX-8320E 3.2GHz 8-Core Processor ($126.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: *CRYORIG H5 Ultimate 76.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($46.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: *G.Skill Ares Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($144.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $318.97
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
*Lowest price parts chosen from parametric criteria
Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-02-20 18:41 EST-0500

CPU: planning to just get the cheapest fx-8300 from whatever ebay/amazon seller
RAM: the Ares is 33mm tall, should be able to fit under the H5

2x GTX 480 and the rest of components would come out of my existing rig, then incremental upgrades depending on what deals come up.

Nearly spit coffee on that one. thumb.gif

Please don't take offense, but if you get bit by the bug like many of us have, before long you won't be able to find your chair.biggrin.gif

My 'hobby' room needs a good cleaning. The pile of component boxes (full or saved to refill) are a mountain. 40+ .. and that's not counting the boxes behind the ones I can see .. ones in the loft. Wife would kill me if she knew how many are in the loft.eek.gif
