i7-5775C for home Server?

Thread Starter
Gents,

Good Evening. Looking for some advice. Im trying to build a powerfulish 24/7 server for the house to replace a NUC that acts as my DC/DNS/DHCP and File Server w/ some USB3 Drives. I want to dip into some ESXi and maybe run a few different VMs, one replacing the above, while also running an in-line, realtime Sophos UTM Next Gen Firewall as another VM.

Im thinking about the 5775C for the build for a good Performance per Watt situation. Im not trying to break the bank here, and understand there might be more powerful 6 core Haswell options, but I really kind of want to mess with Broadwell while I have the chance. Also not sure how the extra L4 cache might handle in these server situations. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Also, can anyone recommend a good Z97 Mobo that would come with this CPU support out of the box? I want something stable and solid, and dont have another Haswell to slot in just to do a BIOS upgrade, so out of the box Broadwell support is required.

Other Components are:
32GB RAM - Probably DDR3L 1600
400GB Intel PCIe SSD NVME
2x2 TB WD Reds
2x Intel I350 2 port PCIe NICS

Thanks all smile.gif

Make sure your build supports SR-IOV?
