[Build Log] Project HTPC - NesNoir

Welcome to my HTPC Build. Having just finished my current PC, I'm left with the itch to begin another computing endeavor, Which brings me to my NES. I have actually owned it for over a year now and this project has been well and truly on the back burner until now.

Of late, my friends and I have been playing an awful lot of Mario Kart and Mario Party on the N64. We have pretty much begun our search to gather all the classics, Which is proving to be expensive. So my goal from this is to have a Blu-Ray Playing, 4-Player 1080p Nintendo 64 Emulating beast biggrin.gif

For all those Retro Die-Hards out there, I will state now that I bought this NES broken, So I haven't butchered a working NES.

So the concept will stay the same, Building a PC inside of a NES. Although I'm making this a gaming PC with a i3 6100T and a Nvidia GTX 750 Ti. It's not the beefiest card, but it'll play Legion at 1080p @ ultra just fine and play most titles in a more console-esq fashion, Which I'm OK with.

Parts:

[*] Intel Core i3 6100
Beast of a CPU, Should handle all of my emulation needs and Blu-Ray playback.

Intel Core i3 6100T
I do have a 150w Power Brick from Dell, pair with my 160w HDplex psu. Given that the PSU calculator tests of my total system reach pretty close to the 150 threshold, I've opted to take the slightly less powerful cpu to save on Power.

Ultimately decided on the full version biggrin.gif

[*] Noctua NH-L9i
Getting low, low, low, low...

[*] MSI Z170I Gaming Pro AC Mini ITX Motherboard
Such a Feature rich motherboard. More expensive that I would have liked but there are reasons I selected this one. M.2 slot for my SSD, will help to minimize clutter in the case. AC wireless because it beats having a nasty dongle hanging off somewhere. And the Display port for 4K @ 60Hz when I finally buy myself a TV.

MSI B150I Gaming Pro AC Mini-ITX Motherboard
Since I made this thread, MSI has brough this out, Which saves me money and makes more sense as I wont be Overclocking my cpu anyways.

[*] Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x4GB) DDR4
Low profile, Great for Netflix and Chill.

Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x8GB) DDR4
Given that I only have 2 slots, It makes more sense to fill them with more ram than less, and it's only $30 more to double the ram, which is a great saving.

[*] Samsung 850 EVO Series M.2 120GB SSD
Will be plenty for NES games and doesn't really physically impose on the case internal.

Intel 540s Series 240GB
Decided to bump up the storage, because 120gb just aint cutting it no more and the website I buy from no longer stocks Samsung drives.

[*] HDPLEX 160W DC-ATX
From my research this should be just the right amount for my Build. Would love to have the HDPLEX 250w, but they are out of stock.

May consider upgrading to HDPlex 250w seeings as they are back in stock and would remove any power limits. Will have to do some power tests with the full rig before I consider it though.

[*] Slot Load Blu-Ray Drive
To play Blu-Rays.

No longer have room as the 750 Ti takes up the space where this was going to go.

[*] Noctua 40mm NF-A4x10
Because you need to keep that stuff cool!

Still staying, might consider larger fans if thermals becomes an issue in the future.

Timeline:

The progress from today at the chop shop!

I used a dremel, All it did was melt the plastic hahah

I did manage to get the inside almost perfectly clean of all prior studs

This was the plan to replace the bottom cutout

And the test fit, It's currently getting glued in place. I'll patch the rest of the holes and the I/O ports that I chopped out either tonight or tomorrow morning. Then I will fill the exterior with putty and sand for a primer coat biggrin.gif

I certainly have, it's what I've based my build of off, I think mine may be better in a few ways though 😏

Edit:

Just a show of the Epoxy'd base

It's slight low on one corner, But it has restored a tonne of strength and feel very solid.

All the holes are plugged, Next update will be all bogged up and sanded, maybe a primer coat tomorrow :0
