I do not remember ever having a problem with Riva Tuner, however, I used to use ATI[something or other], never had issues with it either with ATI video cards.
About 3 years ago or so, when the ATI R9 290 came out, I was using MSI Afterburner and had no problems, however, now I own an MSI GTX 980 Ti Lightning LE and find that some games, like World of Warships, had problems and sometimes my computer would lock up while playing that game, it did not effect every game, however, a locked up computer is serious.
With the latter problem I thought it may be a driver issue and updated the latest one, at the time, and it did not fix the problem. I decided that possibly the driver was not loading properly, or completely. I found that if I give the computer a couple of extra minutes before entering the game I have no problem. I do not know if this is a problem with game code vs drivers vs Windows Registry vs MSI Afterburner and GeForce 980 Ti - I do not know. After I found a solution I went no further trying to determine exactly which of the above had anything to do with my problems.
A side note, I do not purchase the most expensive hardware, but DO purchase high quality PSU and motherboard, suited to overclocking and long life.
