[ArsTechnica] LG G5 hands-on - Page 9

I don't understand? I mirror my Note 5 to my Firestick on my tv all the time with my phone display off. No problem at all...
It looks hideous and the default battery is pretty damn small, but the modules are a great addition. Otherwise we can probably expect more of what we saw with the G4, which is a pretty good thing, honestly.

Yeah, same here! I've also mirrored my note 5 to a Samsung and an LG TV and the display was off as well. My S4 had an option to turn on the screen if you wanted to but I haven't played around enough with the Note 5 to check that.

I have to agree that the phone from the back is meh... Also the modules will be a pain to use because you have to SHUT OFF / DOWN the phone to replace any of the modules (This was mentioned in multiple MWC coverages of G5).

This means that if you want to take a picture you...

1. Turn off phone
2. Remove base module
3. Attach camera module
4. Turn on phone
5. Take a picture (after waiting for the boot up sequence)

I don't know about you but the shot I wanted is long gone by then.

As for a the dac (Bang & Olufson) contraption, why would I bring an extra accessory that would mean going through the same steps just to listen to my music? Most mobile phones have a decent dac chip which allows you to listen to music while on the go (or spotify, etc.). If your going to bring an added accessory, I'd rather bring my DAP that will play with my car and play all my lossless files and can handle any of my IEMS and Headphones.

What are you talking about? G5 is just like any other phone if you want to treat it, "like any other phone". You don't have to take off anything to take pictures.

However, if you want a better camera, or to use any other accessory that's a module, then it makes all the sense in the world that you would have to turn off the phone. I don't see the big deal and I don't see how it's a minus.

No other phone has the option to re-configure your phone with different "parts"...

Absolutely agree that these are lame, but the idea is good and can be built on. Also I think the camera module is something you keep on for a longer period, for example if you're going for a holiday/expect to take a lot of pictures/or if you want the extra battery juice you could just keep it on all the time even if it is a bit clunky.

Assuming you aren't mixing up streaming and mirroring here...

You're case is very particular (and intriguing) I believe, as the most common need for a user is to both have the screen on for the paired devices so the user can issue the commands from the phone and watch it on the screen (like playing games, etc.) and the second being able to share videos, movies (even NFL games, NBA games, etc) while having the phone screen turned off.

I'm curious as to how you would issue commands (injecting touch commands while keeping the screen off) to a (phone) screen that is off if you couldn't see it? Like gestures?

EDIT: Samsung also has a couple screen mirroring type - 1. Screen Mirroring (standard) 2. Side Sync

I agree that the idea is great but the execution needs a generation or two of refinements. I kind of see what you mean when you say you keep the camera module on longer, but it looks awful (and is cumbersome because of the bulk). Imagine when you need to use the phone for other things, like taking in calls or sending out emails, etc.

Then don't use the camera module. You don't have to use the modules. I don't understand where your criticism stems from.
