Its quite interesting how heated people get over the gender of the main character. I would not mind a Catalina 2.0 in the next GTA but we have moral crusades going on here over a big fat rumor. This rumor needs a ship loaded with salt because Rockstar is so tight lipped about anything GTA related that no one will know what the next GTA is about until few months til its release.

But nope, lets argue about rumors nonetheless.

These are the average and standard deviation values for Japan, which is a good control since it is a relatively homogenous population. (The wiki page does have U.S. populations by ethnicity, but I couldn't find st.dev values for U.S. populations.)

Japan:
172.0 cm +/- 5.42 (males)
158.7 cm +/- 5.30 (females)

Let's go with 2x st.devs as the measure of variability (approx. 95% confidence interval).

variability (males): 5.42 * 2 = 10.84
variability (females): 5.42 * 2 = 10.60

Difference between average sexes: 13.3

So it looks like the average difference is greater than the variability.

Hey, some of us have been consistent the entire time in saying that it's all a big 'if'. My questions have been directed towards people who seem to take extreme umbrage at the very existence of that 'if'. I'm legitimately curious about why it seems to make people so angry.

For Japan, a country both on the low side of the human height spectrum in general, with an above average male/female differential.

According to NHANES 2005-2006 via Wolfram Alpha, mean male height easily falls within two standard deviations of mean female height. Overall, this survey represents a larger, better mixed, and better representative population.

Regardless of the specific location used, there is an enormous overlap in male and female sizes. People complaining that women are too small and weak to be physically imposing characters may as well be saying the same thing about south-east Asian men featured in media along side African American or Nordic men.

I am specifically asking about height differences due to sex, not due to ethnicity, sorry for the misunderstanding.

The height difference in Japan is lower than western countries. In Japan, the effect size is 1.08 (i.e., males are 108% taller than females). In the U.K. and the U.S. for example, the effect size is estimated to be 1.09. In Ireland, the effect size is estimated to be 1.09-1.10.

I took some time to review this study (you can find it here: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr010.pdf)

It looks like the numbers WA calculates are based on the entire study across all age groups. I.e., they're clustering 2 year olds with 80 year olds in their total distribution. WA states that a 95th confidence interval for height is 3'3" (????) to 6'3" so you can clearly see that something is amiss; shorter than 3'3" obviously do not make up 2.5% of the population.

However, if you look at adults, the numbers are much more realistic. according to the NHANES study you cited the confidence intervals are:

women: 173.1 - 150.7 cm
men: 188.7 - 163.6 cm

So even in a heterogenous population such as the U.S., not controlling for outside factors such as ethnicity, the difference in height is larger than the variation.

This is according to your own reference.

Indeed, that is something I overlooked.

The difference falls barely outside 2 sigma. What does this change about the position I'm arguing, other than maybe I should have said 2.5 sigma instead of 2?

Is a 5'10"+, 175+ pound, athletic woman somehow beyond the realm of plausibility? I'm fairly certain there are noticeably smaller men in the recent GTA games getting their hands dirty.

People 2.5 standard deviations above normal height are vastly more common than some of the other demographics taken for granted in GTA.

Wow, this thread went super-science.

tl;dr for everyone else: there's no reason, physical or otherwise, a female lead would be implausible in GTA. thumb.gif
