Thermal compound after application

I was wondering how is the TIM you usually use after a while of being applied and just stored for some months?

I havent used an Antec formual 7 tubing for some months and I think it has been dried a bit and the viscosity has changed to something similar to NT H1 after some month of the first application, less liquid than before...

do you use any trick to avoid this? or does this happens to some compounds?

I keep my compounds in ziploc plastic bag. The cryorig paste i had in there for almost a year was still good. I've heard some some putting it in a bag and warming it a bit and have had good results.

I usually keep extra TIM refrigerated in a sealed container. Even the tubes on my bench is in a sealed container. Thicker TIM is usually easier to apply if it is warmed up. becoming softer / more liquid. wink.gif

i just leave my tubes in a toolbox that is full of my geeky tools. I have in the past used IC diamond (known to be very thick) and have warmed it up by placing it into a sandwich bag and then put that into hot water from the tap for a couple of mins. Works like a charm and becomes very easy to apply

I will try the ziploc-like bag into hot water
Thanks
IC diamond and AF7 are similar maybe it should work

What about being stored in the refrigerator after the hot water?would it lose some property?

I cant imagine it would. Under use, look at the extreme temperature swings and the paste still performs

This may be true, but freezing something is a lot different for some materials than heating it up. Consider what happens to milk when you freeze it. It crystalizes and in that process the binary parts separate.

You might want to try it before freezing the lot of your paste.

That is a really good point that i didnt consider, good thought

While in all likelihood TIM can probably be safely stored in -0c temps, is the reason II refrigerate, rather than freeze. I know refrigerating is not detrimental, but storing in sealed and cool enviroment does stop (or at least greatly slow down) any evaporation and / or aging that may occur.
