In a NASA 360 video University of California Santa Barbara professor Philip Lubin describes the process of "photonic propulsion." It involves propelling objects with mass-free particles of light (photons). Basically, pushing spaceships with a great, big laser.

Misleading title. Article is lacking info. All it does say is Nasa knows HOW to reach Mars inside 1 Month.

Thats about as useful as me 'knowing' how to travel to Alpha Centuri in a few hours. I 'just' need an Alcubierre Warp Drive.

Read most of the paper. It's kind of poorly written, but it IS a good idea. The idea of a solar sail is already known, this is just expanding that to use a laser instead of sunlight as electromagnetic propulsion. Mainly useful for low mass objects (unmanned, no payload, etc). So we could send probes out to Alpha Centauri quickly and cheaply for example. Although I don't know how we would get any info back, as any transmitter would require a lot of power

Less to do with the power of the transmitter and more to do with waiting 4 years between communication.

It's just utterly pointless sending anything outside our solar system as long as the speed of light remains a hard limit. Better off pouring that money into bigger and more advanced telescopes, cameras, etc to observe as much as we can from earth/space. Imagine a Hubble 2.0 biggrin.gif

We pretty much have to sit tight until warp drives or wormhole travel becomes a thing.

It can get our corpses to other solar system, we don't yet know how to survive those g forces.

The acceleration/deceleration forces to reach mars within 1 month would mean roughly constant +5g forces the whole way. Most military combat pilots will push +5g, but only for mere seconds at a time - all the while wearing clothing and equipment designed to them cope with those forces. Now imagine what would happen to a human body after 4 weeks of constant +5g forces - nothing but a puddle of mush in the bottom of the capsule????

 

Thanks NASA, but no thanks,...
