Asrock 970m pro3 - An Introduction and looking for advice

Hi Overclock forum! I'm Dspazio and first of all, I want to introduce me and my history with my build (the Marriage Breaker). I've been lurking around this forum two months ago (the time when I bought the pieces from my rig), but today, I want to share my experiences with this infamous motherboard and why not? ask for advice and share my current settings to improve or fix errors in those. As a sidenote, Im not a natve English speaker, so I apologize in advanced.

I've a strong technical background, running a small IT bussiness and working on the field almost 17 years. But my experience on gaming systems, overclocking.. etc.. is very limited, if not inexistent. When the need of a new home computer arised, I thought it was a good chance to update my knowledge and build myself a powerful, yet budget-friendly, computer.

For me, the AMD route looked very pleasing, as the prices are slightly under the intel mark, and I've never got any AMD machine. Also, I was looking forward for a small form factor. As some of you are minding right now, those checks led me to choose between the three or four mATX+ mobo with socket AM3. My first mistake, and lesson:

If you're planning to overclock your AMD system, go for ATX cases. As I learnt after, the power phase design is one of the most important thing to have on count when buying a mobo.

My second choice was the CPU, on this point I think I've some lucky cause I went with the FX 8320E (After, I realized the convenience of it's 95W TDP on said motherboard).

Third. Cooling system - Driven by curiosity, I bought an AIO liquid cooling system, Enermax Liqumax II 120. Good, cause the CPU core temp looks very good so far (30+ minutes prime burn: max 36c) - Bad, cause VRM section lacked for a proper airflow.

So after one month of testing, I'm having this situation:

My CPU is running at 4GHz from 3,2GHz, with cool and quiet enabled. My cpu voltage is 1,285mv with an offset of +100mv (I realized that using offset, temps tends to be slightly lower). Also I want to start with the main multiplier? (that 200Mhz setup)

After 1 hour of prime95 burn, socket temp varies between 57-55.. looks very stable and I can not spot any "throttling" or weird cpu frequency or voltage behaviour. Of course, all cores are working.

After reading some coments on this forum, I used the stock cooler AMD fan to blow air directly to VRM heatsink. I think this is very important and let me to reach said speeds and voltages.

Here's a pic with the current airflow scheme:

The VRM fan is below the left blue arrow.

And that's all. My main questions can be sorted in:

  • what's the difference between 1,385 Vcore voltage and 1,285 Vcore with +100 mv offset? I think my system run cooler with the second option
  • I am not planning to use the rig for long gaming sessions (unfortunatelly I cannt due to time constraints) but maybe 10 or 12 hours per week. Are those settings dangerous? I think they arent.. but I want to know your opinion.
  • What settings can I change for enhace speed (or stability) without increasing voltage? Is 19,5 x 205Mhz better than 20 x 200 Mhz? I know the first one increases memory speed too, but, anyway.. it's more stable?

Thank you for your time. Feel absolutelly free to ask me anything.

Hello, Welcome to OC.net. If you have the same board that I have 4GHz is probably all you will see. I trying getting above that and the random bluescreen and just failures to boots I finally gave up. Its a great stock board with some up to date features but its not very OC friendly.

Few days ago, I tried the 4,1 assault at 1,325 vcore with same offset. It seems quite stable at first glance and primo burn 10 minutes put temps at 58-59 on socket. But it bsoed during midnight while updating windows 10. I left the computer on cause I was downloading something. This, and a small but strange glitch: the windows 10 screen sliding just before log in.. No more smooth, it looks very jittery, so I returned to the safety of 4ghz base camp.

Yeah, maybe the mobo cannt go far away, but to be honest, its very funny to give it a try.

Thanks!
