What are the effects of using an 8GB(2x4GB), and a 8GB(1x8GB)

Ok, so I'm planning an upgrade to my build and was wondering if anything bad would come from mixing a 2x4GB Crucial Ballistix Sport and a 1x8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport, both with the same specs except for the allocation of RAM(1 stick vs 2). I do think if needed my mobo has flex mode(Gigabyte 970A-UD3P rev.1 with latest BIOS version) if that helps.

Thanks for any help

You can't use em in dual channel, for one.

edit: looking up on flex mode, that's about running 2 modules of different spec, not 3. You can however run the 1x8GB stick and 1x4GB stick together, to use 8GB in total in dual channel. But you get that already...

Can only dual channel sticks in the slots corresponding to each other.

edit: though you can use all of the ram, just not all of it in dual channel. Though 8GB should still be in dual channel, looking at google for a bit. Not sure how that works, but interesting!

Also just to make sure you mean that it is possible to get 12GB total in Dual channel by mixing a1x4 stick and a 1x8 stick, because that's a game changer, I thought I could only run two sticks of the same capacity.
