Best 140mm fan for hard drives? - Page 4

The only problem with the Thermalright TY-14x fans for casework is that their frames are round and their top speeds are too fast. However, in my review of 140mm TR fans on OCF I included the square-framed TR X-Silent 140. It did a fine job -- at 900 rpm!

Couldn't find the review you are talking about, could you post a link ?
Were you referring about 1300 rpm max ones ?
How would the TY do against the x silent at same RPM ?

Rumor is the problems of using TY-147A and TY-143 151x140 housing with 105mm mount spacing as case fans will soon to be solved with the square housing TY-147A Sq and TY-143 Sq. I have tested a couple of these and they are same an as before in square housings. I don't have any fancy test equipment, but temperature and noise levels when tested on cooler and radiator are the same as I got with normal round models.

the 'round fans or not' question is worthless when you have a good case (ie enthoo Pro) as it includes both 120 and 140mm holes/space in the same fan spot.

You are speaking without knowing the facts.

Reality is few if any case fan mounts are design to use multiple 140mm and 120mm square fans, not 140mm round fans with 120mm mounts. If 140mm fans with 120mm mounts do fit is just chance, not design. I know of no cases 'designed' to accommodate 140mm fans with 120mm mounts.

Detailed explanation:
Reality is 120mm and 140mm case mounts support square fan mounting. While a few will mount 140mm fans with 120mm fan mounts (105mm spacing), it is just luck, not planning .. and then only if the fans are 140mm side to side. If they are round like FHP141, two cannot be fit side by side. Even fans 140mm side to side often will not fit because their rounded size will not fit.
Enthoo Pro front almost supports 2x140mm fans with 105mm mount spacing, but mounting holes are really not quite right. Top does not. Only 2x 140mm 105mm mount spacing fans can be fit in top .. but 3x 140mm square fans with 124.5mm mount spacing go right in.

Interesting question in light of what you have already stated as fact.

You already said your case can do it, why are you asking us?

I think 140mm fan is rather enthusiasts targeted, and those with 120mm mounting hole is like niche of the enthusiast products. Anyways, it is not like thermalright even pushing to sell their fan separately. All the fan review happened just because reviewer test the fan when they review a hsf product.

If you can fit the long side in your case, you can always zip tie / velco them whatever.

The 'niche' as you call it is cooler fans ..round 140mm fans with 120mm fan mounts are made for air coolers. Thermalrgiht, Noctua and Silverstone .. and now more copies by other companies.
But many of these fans have been tested independently from cooler testing.
ehume tested TY-140, TY-147A and TY-143 fans, he does not test Thermalright coolers.
geggeg tested TY-147A and has not tested any Thermalright coolers on his Thermalbench forum..
Cyclops tested TY-147 fan, he does not test Thermalright coolers.
and those are just a couple I know about because I was involved.

Cooling Technique does both fans and coolers, but fan testing is independent of cooler.
Hardware.fr does fans independent of coolers and they have tested the TY-141

They have not sent me heatsinks for review, but they did send fans.
