Questions on the Location of a Server

Thread Starter
So I am planning to build a server so that I can access movies and pictures on any device. My question is, is it a good idea to put the server in a semi climate controlled garage (just insulated)? I live in a somewhat diverse climate with cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers. During the winter, I would think the server would perform great and be plenty cool, but during the summer I am worried. Would the heat be too much in an insulated garage? Would the server short out due to humid conditions? I would think that an insulated garage would be controlled enough, but I still have thoughts that the elements may break my equipment.

As long as your garage isn't a swamp, a desert or a barren tundra it'll be okay.

I would be worried about humidity and the heat in the summer. But of course that depends where you live.

Knowing what some large datacenter providers _cough_ facebook _cough_ amazon run their datacenters at, it'll probably be ok. To even go into an AWS datacenter you have to put on a cooling vest. I've heard anecdotal stories of it being in excess of 90 degrees pretty regularly. You may shorten the lifespan of the hardware some, but overall it should run ok.

That's pretty neat. I wish they shared information, I would love to see data on HVAC expense vs temperature vs hardware failure rates. There is obviously some favourable cost savings if they're willing to run temperatures so high.
