First Build Ever

Thread Starter
So I decided this year to fulfill a long time dream of mine with my tax returns and build myself a gaming computer! I finally got in all but my SSD today and sat down to figure things out. I had a couple people recommend I do a build log, so here it goes.

First, my parts.

Case: Corsair Vengeance Series Military Green C70 Mid Tower Computer Case (CC-9011018-WW)
CPU: AMD FD6300WMHKBOX FX-6300 6-Core Processor Black Edition
MOBO: Gigabyte AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gbps USB 3.0 ATX AM3+ Socket DDR3 1600 Motherboards (GA-970A-DS3P)
GPU: XFX Double Dissipation R9 380 990MHZ XXX OC 4GB DDR5 DisplayPort HDMI DUAL DVI
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 B1 80+ BRONZE, 750W Semi Modular 5 Year Warranty Power Supply 110-B1-0750-VR
RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY 8GB Kit (2x4GB) 1866MHz DDR3 CL10 DIMM - Black (HX318C10FBK2/8)
HDD: Seagate 1TB Desktop HDD SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive (ST1000DM003)
SSD: Kingston Digital 120GB SSDNow V300 SATA 3 2.5 (7mm height) Solid State Drive (SV300S37A/120G)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit, System Builder OEM DVD 1 Pack (For Refurbished PC Installation)

The box pics. Forgive my pictures, I used my cellphone.:

After installing the fans:

Everything in place except the SSD which I won't get until tomorrow. I feel like I did ok on cable management for a firstie:

Back I/O and my messy hidden cables:

Had a moment of panic when I plugged it in and hit the psu switch and nothing happened. Then my boyfriend mentioned the power button and I realized, I didn't hit it! Once I did that, it works and gets to POST. That's as far as I'm going tonight, until I get the SSD in! I'll update with my adventures in setting it up tomorrow or Thursday!

congrats on your first build. looks good

Hey there,

Good job on your first build! Nice to see a novice builder taking steps to manage their cables and airflow! thumb.gif

Quick one for you, something looked out of place in your photos. You're currently limiting yourself performance wise by keeping the DDR3 installed in a single channel (slots 3 and 1, as you have it, are both Channel B).

Check your motherboard manual on pages 4 and 9. Gigabyte recommends installing a two-module configuration in slots 1 (Channel B) and 2 (Channel A).
Enjoy the new build! cheers.gif

Thank you for pointing that out! I read the manual wrong and got really confused at which ones were which!

So I just spent about six hours getting this thing set up! I really have to say that the internet is a life saver. I ran into several issues along the way with getting everything configured right, but I'm finally finished! I have my first games installing now.

Love seeing first time builds, great job! For your next minor upgrade you might want to consider getting a tower CPU cooler, especially if you ever want to try your hand at overclocking.
