Quote:
New World Interactive and Focus Home Interactive announced today Insurgency: Sandstorm. Insurgency: Sandstorm will be a new first-person shooter powered by Unreal Engine 4. The game will be coming to the PC in 2017, and promises to feature a new story mode and Insurgency’s classic multiplayer and cooperative gameplay.

I am now a very happy man biggrin.gif Cant wait to see what they can do with the Unreal 4 engine

Very nice! Huge fan of it too. I hope the community doesn't die in Insurgency. It seems like there are so many changes that I can't keep up with it. Every time I boot it, it's a new interface. Now a new game.

Not sure how I feel about this.

On the one hand, Insurgency is a great game and I'd love to see some more focused development progress rather than the seemingly constant back and forth changes to little things, and occasional map changes that break everything in the game for a while.

On the other hand, I've never liked Unreal 3 and I don't have high hopes for Unreal 4. I literally cannot think of a buggier engine that has given me more headaches (other than perhaps early versions of Unity). 9/10 games I've attempted to play on Unreal 3 have either been completely unplayable on multiple systems, or required extensive .ini editing, modding, and otherwise screwing with to become playable. Meanwhile, Source works smoothly on anything and everything, and while it is somewhat limited these days, those limitations are mostly beyond the scope of a game like Insurgency.

Perhaps with this sequel, they are looking to make a larger game that would make working with Source a headache. I suppose that might make sense, considering the original Insurgency is still going strong and does not really seem to be in need of a direct remake style sequel. In that case, I can see the appeal of a new engine, but I question their choice of Unreal 4 over, say, Cryengine or Lumberyard.

Which games are those? I have been playing Chiv and Killing Floor 2 as of late and both games run favourably on Unreal 3. Especially Killing Floor. I'm not a programmer or even remotely connected with Video Game design.

However, wouldnt it be smart to move to an easier and more versatile engine? Maybe they have big plans for the game and Source wont meet these requirements?

resurrecting this for insurgency players.
I'm with Zero4549 on this.
Unreal engine may look better but the modding community may not like it.
Insurgency with source engine and tons of mods is already perfect right now. It also looks good the way it is.
Cryengine would be the worthy graphics update.

There's some comparison shots at this source : https://newworldinteractive.com/announcing-insurgency-sandstorm/

It looks like it's just a port to UE4/Consoles and a cash in. However, i really hope that it has a good layer of polish to it. If the port looks nice ill pay for it, if it looks dated at all, i'm just gona be pissed of that they split the community in two, or expect me to just buy a refresh. Insurgency is a fun game because of the realism/atmosphere so i think porting it to a new engine was a good move, i just hope they do it right.

The screenshot's in the link look promising. I also hope they don't lose sight of why people like this game.

Hopefully the next one will have far better optimisation. The stutter and FPS spikes really put me off playing Insurgency on a more regular basis. Particularly as the graphics are relatively basic. Still a good game though.
Insurgency in its early beta (first public release) was honestly the best, decent sized maps and the game was just good....it really went downhill with the massive changes.
