Memory upgrade problems

My HP computer says it will take up to 4GB per slot. It currently has 1GB ( 1Rx8 PC2-5300U-555-12, HYMP112U64P8-Y5 AB-C ) per slot. I bought 4GB sticks ( 2Rx8 PC2-6400U-666-12, HYMP125U64CP8-S6 AB-C ) which does not work. Computer acts like it will start, but does not, CPU fan starts running real fast. Anyone care to tell me what I did wrong. Thanks

What model HP computer?

Likely each slot can have a 4 GB stick, but the total memory is limited to 8 GB.
