Upgrade Advice - Moving to X79 Platform

Thread Starter
I am currently looking at upgrading to the X79 platform from my old X58 system that i'm currently on.
I'm looking at currently getting a 3930k or higher depending on cost.
What motherboards do people recommend and are there any to stay away from?

Currently i have a 2 offers lined up for me to purchase.

Offer 1:
- 3930k
- Asrock Extreme6 motherboard (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/X79%20Extreme6/)

$450 AUD

Offer 2:
- 3930k
- Gigabyte X79-UP4 (http://www.gigabyte.com.au/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4288#ov)

$420 AUD

Are any of these offers good or should i look for something else with a better board. I've been looking for an Asus board but currently can't find any for sale and if i can they are really expensive in Australia.

Thanks

EDIT: Forgot to mention i'm going to have clearance issues with the Gigabyte board possibly with my AIO so i'd probably end up going back to an air cooled heatsink for that

Why do you want to upgrade to a platform that is already dead and gone?
X99 has replaced X79 so moving to X79 from X58 does not make sense unless the X79 stuff is really cheap.

That reminds me that i will be selling all my X79 stuff in the autumn.

Reason for going X79 is i want to go for a 6 core processor. And going down the X99 route is a little bit more expensive than what i can spend. I could go down the Z97 for similar price but then i only get 4 cores max.

What AIO are you planning to use on the motherboard?

I currently have a H100i GTX i think the top of the heatsink on the Gigabyte board will hit the rad because of my case.

While I am quite happy with my X79 system, if it died to day, I wouldn't replace it with another one. Even though X99 is more expensive, it will be more up to date, have more features, and you probably will be able to use the DDR4 RAM in future builds whereas the DDR3 RAM for x79 can't be used on any of the enthusiast boards past x79.

You see tho i currently already have ram in my system which im going to move across to the X79 platform if i get it. So for me if the system died id either go back to X58 waiting for X99 or whatever is around when it dies to be within the price bracket i want to spend.

I specifically want a 6 core cpu and here in aus x99 is about $450 just for the cpu where as with X79 i can get a motherboard as well for that price so for me its better off going X79.

x79 would currently make sense only if you are planning on getting an 8 core Xeon like E5-2670 which sells around $70 on ebay for a used processor. I personally feel $400+ AUD is currently too overpriced for an older motherboard like x79. I am not sure about what you have got running currently on your x58, but you could always get a used 6 core Xeon processor for your x58 and overclock it like crazy. You could save the money on the x79 upgrade and directly jump to x99 or Skylake-E when you get good deals on them.
