Just turn it off.

This looks exactly like someone complaining about getting a kick in the face, instead of avoding the kick in the first place.

Wow, so just like defending the atrocious business behaviors of MS, you would place the blame on a person being assaulted and not the one committing the crime. Let me guess, you also say "well with that outfit on she was asking for it.". What planet am I on???? How do people drink the Kool-Aid so deeply?

Now 50% off is not a bad deal, and perhaps if I had purchased office 2013 a few years ago I might like this sort of "deal", however I just paid full price for 2013 less than 8 months ago, and m$ is now spamming me with ads to upgrade. It's vexing to say the least. Worse still I've been completely unable to STOP the ads telling me to buy office 2016 for 50% off!.

No this is not adware, this is windows 10. I fear this is just the tip of the iceberg too.

Antivirus/malware/security suite software does the same thing when the new version becomes available even if you have a a year left on your subscription. How is the above any different?

On a side note, I want to drop Windows 8.1 on my main system and go with Linux over Windows 10, any recommendations on which version would be best? Also what would be a good alternative to office 2016 for Linux?

Never though I'd see precedence used to support unwanted behavior.

Anyway, big differences here. It's not like we can boot up our favorite antivirus/malware/security suite software and install our choice of a paid-for but ad-opt-out operating system for the non-critical use cases like proprietary office documents.

Not sure what you are referring to. Just about every software program I use that gets updated provides me with a prompt for upgrading said software. His point was about Office 2013, not sure how it related to the original topic of the operating system spamming you with ads... He was attributing something to the OS that is innately embedded into Office itself..

Yes it is. Please stop trying to shift the discussion to something that has nothing to do with anything. At this point.what are you even complaining about? MS "lack of transparency"?

Well this is about ads, wich are optional. Not hard to reach the conclusion that "fun facts, tips and more on your lockscreen" = the ads you are looking at.

no shift here, the ads are a surprise causing frustration to people because MS isn't forth coming that a user can opt out let alone will happen and explaining that is not complaining.

When you use the default theme you get a different lockscreen wallpaper everyday.

The upper left ticker provides information about the picture such as a location. IE mine is Jokulsarlon, Iceland
The upper right ticker is a rating system for the lockscreen. You can thumbsup or thumbs down the current wallpaper. Thumbs down will fetch you a new wallpaper immediately.
The middle ticker is a link to the Windows store.

None are ads.

well, there you go. who would figure a link to buy products is an ad? smile.gif

Its not an ad. Clearly you have no idea what an ad is. Please turn off adblocker and visit Facebook for ads or this very site.
Those big flashy animated squares are ads.

This is Microsoft promoting a Windows feature.

why are you trying to explain an ad to me?

advertisement
something (such as a short film or a written notice) that is shown or presented to the public to help sell a product or to make an announcement

i simply repeated back what you said; its no way possible that displaying an image of a product, like the movie minions or the game RoTTR, with a link to a store and buy it is an ad.

According to your own posted definition this does not qualify as an ad.
