[TT] AMD will reportedly reach record low CPU and GPU market share soon - Page 20

They are superior where it counts for most buyers. Reliability and safety. Plus comparing an exotic to a econo box is not really the same thing. A more fair example would be cars close to each other in price and segment. And in those case the better cars generally outsell the others. A car that has fails to function correctly will get blackballed fast. This has happened MANY times in automotive history.

The TS conversation pretty much boiled down to the fact that the few guys we have using AMD gpu's are at the end of their ropes dealing with issues they have. One guy has a pair of 290x cards in xfire and has nothing but problems since day one, mirroring my own experiences with Xfire. His biggest complaint is how long it takes to get xfire support even in major titles. Where my SLI rigs are ready to go on launch most of the time. A recent problem that all of them have had is in Insurgency. All of our AMD gpu users get the same pink/purple and black checkerboard texture errors of various maps. In the same places at the same time every time. They have been changing drivers and working among themselves to figure out a fix. By the end of the night the consensus from all of them, regardless of benchmarks they all plan to go nvidia the next go round.

It's not just benchmarks that are driving AMD sales down. In the case of the GPU market it is the back end support after sale that most people I know have gotten sick of. That is why I stopped using them. That is why many people have stopped using them. Who cares if they get a few more FPS with an AMD card if the overall experience of ownership is worse? Neither side is perfect by any means. But for the most part nvidia does a better job with the ever important software support.

Does it look something like this? Seems to be an issue with missing textures (on reflective surfaces?).

Pretty much most of the responses boiled down to "verify game cache", "alt tab out of the game a few times". There's also this video on how to fix missing textures with Garry's mod but I've a feeling that might be irrelevant.

It is smaller squares in a purple and black checker board. Weapon models get it from time to time too. But when it happens it's only AMD users in the game and happens to ALL of them at the same time. It's really odd.

I am still getting used to the AMD software suite, but the only game I had stuttering (no worse than my quad Titans though..lol) with overclocked Fury was Witcher 3, and I had my 3930k at stock clocks with an overclocked Fury. So, not sure if CPU had anything to do with it. Without an overclocked Fury, Witcher 3 played smoothly. All other games have been playing very smoothly too. Unless I am benching, I don’t overclock my cards anyway.

With regards to the strategy, again it’s just my opinion, I believe that AMD is better positioned to take advantage of DX 12 with GCN and it looks like that AMD may also have the node jump on Nvidia this year. All in all, I am feeling pretty good about my move to AMD card. We will see how it turns out.

Looking forward, as a consumer, I couldn’t care less about how much AMD sold last year, or how much money Nvidia made by providing a limited optimization support period for its customers, since I know what Nvidia’s value proposition for me is as a consumer; optimization support for 8-12 months, and then better buy a new card if I want to keep the privilege of optimizations, or suffer planned EOL phase out. In addition, given Nvidia’s obsession with other kooky ventures, cars, tegra, whatever, etc., I figured I can only do better with AMD, since AMD’s efforts are concentrated in the consumer graphic segment, particularly with Polaris, GCN, etc. Just my two cents…lol

Plenty of companies that make great products end up in failure. Its not the product, its the marketing.

Its a known fact that AMD products are way superior compared to Nvidia. Its just that their marketing is not up to par. So pple thinks that Nvidia is better when its actually inferior.

If you apply that logic to GPU's, then Titan X is elite. And I have two.

And if you knew cars you would know Ferrari is not known for reliability. Just speed and looking cool. Great to show off in on the weekend. But not what you rely on to get you to the office.

Also, using them in my analogy is a bad choice. As we are talking market shares. Cost means nothing. So, comparing a Ferrari to a Toyota means you lack the understand of the analogy. They cater to very different market segments. People do not buy a passion item for rational reasons. But they do buy utility for rational reasons. My passion car is my 09 RX8, because rotary. But my utility is my 98 GMC truck that is basically bullet proof. The car is not sensible and I would never argue that it is the greatest car ever made. But I love to drive it.

No it's not. Most of the time both Nvidia and AMD's cards are practically on par where it really just boils down to one feature or another or the price that sways people or indeed marketing and brand loyalty, it's really only in the top end do you see one actually getting a decent size leg up over the other, and it can go either way.

No card is "way superior" from either side, it also comes down to subjectivity some of the time. Some people will sacrifice 10 fps to save $100, some people will pay an extra premium for slightly more performance, no one is wrong for either choice.

Regarding software, neither side is perfect, they both have advantages and both have disadvantages in different areas.
