Thinking of building a home file server/media PC/seedbox

Thread Starter
just wondering if this would be sufficient for the actions listed in the title. I want to make a small yet large in storage space home server using the components listed below. I already have an SSD sitting around that I was planning to use for the OS.
Also I plan on having it run 24/7 so I am hoping it will also be good on the monthly power bill as well because currently if I keep my main PC on 24/7 I can see an increase of up to $30+ a month on my power bill and would like to avoid that.
I was also thinking linux to keep unwanted background windows crap out of the picture as I will only likely want to be running what is needed for the seeding and virus/malware programs and maybe the occasional youtube/netflix stuff.

On a side note, I am pretty sure the PSU I've selected is a bit overkill but I did want a gold rated power supply and that is about the lowest I could find. Also I will be adding more HDD's into the mix later but due to budget that is all it will be getting to start with. Will likely run 4 of them in RAID 10 for 8TB total storage space, but if it gets full I guess I could get more.

Parts are as follows:

Case: SilverStone DS380B
PSU: SILVERSTONE SX500-LG 500W SFX-L 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply
Motherboard: MSI N3150I ECO Intel N3150 Quad Core 6W Intel Braswell Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3
RAID Card: Adaptec RAID 6405E 2270800-R
PCI Slot cooler to help with Raid Card: AOC FC-2000
Hard Drives: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST4000NM0023 4TB, only 2 for now.
KB&M: Logitech MK100, chose a PS/2 KB just in case the bios is dumb. (cant find much info on it.)

Total would be around $1000 thinking.gif

Is it worth it or does someone have a better solution in mind?

The only recommendation I would make is that you should plan on putting some type of active cooling on that raid card.
The reason is that adaptec designs those with 1U style air flow, where the air is heavily channeled through the case and provides good air flow to the expansion cards.
Without it, they run hot.

Also I don't see the need to get the Seagate constellation drives, they are expensive and hot running.
You can get the same thing from WD red drives for a fair bit cheaper.

I wouldn't call the PSU overkill, it feels like the right area for a build like this.
Plus being old rated, it should be good on power.

Yeah, I saw in reviews that the raid card runs very hot, that is why I figured I would use that PCI slot fan directly below it, though I do not know if that would be sufficient enough to keep it cool as it would be pulling hot air away from it instead of pushing cool air onto it.
I hear that at some point adaptec made a cooler for it but I can not find it anywhere. Perhaps I'll co for an actual server mobo so I am not restricted to only a PCI-e 1X lane.

Also, thanks for the heads up on the Hard drives, there are so many out there that it is tough to figure out what ones I want in the end.
