i5 6600k freezes during idle

Hi everyone,

I recently completed my new Skylake build.

i5 6600k

Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI

G. Skill 3200 2x4GB

Win 10 64 bit

Now what happens is the monitor cuts off to a black screen and the computer keeps on running. No beeps or BSODs. It happens randomly from the load up screen to about 30 minutes or less.

If I make it into loading a game like Heroes of the Storm or FFXIV, I've been able to play for like an hour, but once I exited back to the desktop it almost immediately froze. Once I turned on Steam and ran 3dMark benchmark it froze.

I've as of right now, I've tried and disabled as much of the power saving items in the BIOS that I could find. I've googled it and came across this.

Is anyone else here, having issues? If so, how did you work around it? Thanks.

I have the same board and cpu and had the same issues. When I first completed my build I used the cpu upgrade option to overclock to 4.4 at the stock voltage option. It would freeze just like your describing. So I went back into the bios and reset optimized defaults. Then I set the cpu multiplier manually at 44. Set the voltage manually to 1.295 and set the LLC to high. I haven't had a freeze up since. I'm guessing the vdroop was making the system unstable.

I created a account just now because I had the same issues for about a week and feel your pain.

How's has it been running since then? Any issues? Leave it over night on just the desktop?

I haven't had a freeze for five days now. My cpu sits around 28° at idle and I now leave it on all the time now. When it was freezing I would sleep it after like 3 hours not in use.

I don't do any crazy stress testing but I did play battlefield 4 for about 2 hours a couple days ago. Cpu got to a mac temp of 65° and gpu around 75°. A R9 390 so that card gets hot.

Reset bios to defaults and give it a try.

is it your windows? you have screen saver or disable screen display after X minutes?

It's not Windows, because it freezes randomly without screen timeout or anything.

I've basically kept the system running all night while logged into FFXIV. Hasn't froze with the game running.

Have you overclocked your GPU?
Are you water colled? custom loop?

H110i. No OC on GPU.
