For Gamers by Games. They should stop trying to get Dota 2 mainstream. Only people that play Dota can watch Dota.

Some of these comments in this thread made me giggle. Clearly people don't know who he is and why he was hired or maybe some are uneducated. Also hundreds of people can thank 2GD for having an income in esports......

I think Starcraft has evolved more than Dota (though it's hard to say that, having not followed dota much) and a huge portion of starcraft watchers don't play regularly, you could say 85% of watchers have not played in the last month and nobody would hesitate to believe it. Dota could easily be the same way.

Having said that, i think it's wrong to try to change your target audience to cater to viewers of typical american sports channels when the whole esports system is built around the fans, the players who are not like that. This video goes into that from 2:15, though up to that point is amusing+interesting as well.

None of this matters...  Who cares?

I mean after DOTA, and years of DOTA2 who really cares to play that isometric platform anymore.  Load up macros and win from the microwave...

Game is really outdated and needs a boost of dynamic gameplay. As it stands, it is tic-tack-toe. Didn't WOPR explain to you all the outcome of that game, time and time again..?

Actually, with ESPN picking up E-Sports, Dota 2 is one of the most popular MOBAs out there...Obviously behind LoL but, it's still strong enough to garner an audience.

Nice WarGames reference though but, yeah - I'd relate it more to Thermonuclear War than I would tic-tack-toe.

If anyone has watched the CS:GO esports scene, that guy thorin is a supreme douche bag who has said WAY worse than this particular host. In this hosts retort he spoke about personal issues with a member of valves staff before, so I think it was mostly a personal thing.

This particular tourney was incredibly bad from a production standpoint, and the production team has since be fired as well. This man was made to fill in massive gaps in play time due to production issues and did what he could to pass the time. I'm not giving him a free pass by any means, but he was told personally by icefrog to be himself, as opposed to when he was in TI4 and had specific instructions to treat it like an ESPN style sports analyst desk.

The guy is a douche, there's no question, but CS:GO casters make jokes about race, sex, and throw players and teams under the bus all the time. The fact that it's ok for CS, another valve game, and not ok for DOTA 2 sounds like BS to me. It's personal.

Thorin is a Dbag for sure, he's also part of the LoL scene, and has said just as many equally offensive remarks about orgs/players in the past. So much so that he was fired from OnGamers (Owned by CBS interactive), banned from entry into Poland, and a few others. 90% of the time, he goes on mega rants with the other 10% being high quiality work.

For real.

How can people be offended that he was called an ass and quickly glance over all the stuff he said?

Do you really think Ian Darke would talk like this during soccer (futbol)? or Joe Buck during mlb? or Al Michaels during NFL?

If you want to say Gabe acted unprofessionally by calling him an ass then fine but I wouldn't skip over the stuff the guy was saying.

I'll preface this by saying I really, really hate Thorin. But I do think that the reason he gets a pass in the CS:GO scene is because despite his childish antics in his own productions, he tends to remain quite professional during tournament streams and the like. He might have the occasional screwup on pro streams, but everyone does. However, with his own productions, he is a grade A+ ass.

The reason 2GD doesn't get a pass here is because he was a grade A+ ass both on professional productions AND his own production. The former is unacceptable. The latter...well it is his company and he can do whatever he wants to do.

LoL has more casuals but I would have to say Tournaments are bigger in Dota 2 especially price pool.

Also Dota 2 is not Tick Tack Toe. SC2 might but with Dota and other Mobas the only time you play Tick Tack Toe is during drafting. That's only part of the game. Sometimes thats the reason teams win but not always the case.

Basically with lots of sponsorship from big companies, you are going to see a lot more "professionalism" and less edgy, off-brow comments from casters. Sponsors do not want to be associated with controversial content and will pull their money from the events if a lot of public disapproval happens. Companies like Coca Cola do not want to be associated with anything negative like that.

The bigger eSports becomes, the more it will be like traditional real-life sports like the NBA, NFL, FIFA, etc. with the commentators they have. You will not have the rampant profanity, sexual innuendos, and general raunchy internet talk coming out of the commentator's mouth.
