[DS] Gabe Newell Fires Dota 2 Host During Live Tournament. Calls Host 'An Ass'. - Page 4

Not that I care, but I found 2GD's statement here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1B061Rs4gw4zkCec35Q5v2r576e_Jd6pJfrT_5_GZ74I/preview?pref=2&pli=1

I could understand the firing more if he wasn't already told to be himself. They have worked with the guy before, so telling him to be himself makes the blame lay with Valve. Then the first thing posted about the firing is Gabe Newell calling the guy an "ass" publicly on reddit. Imo all it does is make Gabe Newell look childish in how he handled the situation.

I hope the next years presenter might stage a north korean version of the show, where he is blessing the glorious leader Gaben smile.gif only to mix a joke a little and then be dragged off the stage by north korean military clad guards xD

now that would be funny

PS: in my country of 5m i was shocked to find that a local youtuber who spoke only in our language had 1.5million subscribers lol. then i realized since our language is way too similar with neighbouring country of 10m, those numbers are realistic. anyway that guy is puting chocolade on his face and plays pc games and kids/teens like him a lot. its the way he does his job/his persona

gaben behaved here like a billionaire buffoon, who is out of touch with his customer base. ou well, in west the free speech is only if a person has money

Do you understand how business works? If a guy in charge of your tournament behaves like the average Twitch streamer, with less-than-appropriate jokes, he's going to get fired. It's not "muh censorship" and you don't need to protect his "freeze peach." He got fired because that kind of behavior is not acceptable in any remotely professional environment, much less one where you are speaking publicly to thousands of viewers. Do you even public relations, bro? Behavior like this is only going to reinforce a lot of the stereotypes about gamers.

I can tell you that, if I were in charge of marketing, I sure as hell wouldn't want my brand associated with this kind of garbage. I'm sure most tech companies - you know, the ones who would be sponsoring this type of event - wouldn't want to either. In particular, we have companies like Intel who dropped $300 million on getting women into tech (presumably because it's trendy and good free advertising, not because they actually care, but that's for another time) and sponsoring this would look quite out of place given their goal.

So their options come down to A) make eSports mainstream with professional, well-presented tournaments or B) alienate anybody who doesn't think edgy-for-the-sake-of-edgy humor is FUNNI xD. From a business, perspective, the choice is obvious. If you really miss the edgy humor (more often just "humor") try 4chan or Twitch.

Good read, thanks for sharing. Does seem like there was no communication between valve and the production team at all. I mean why would there be, anyway.

So that explains why they look for a whole new production team, because nobody in the existing production team had the ability to communicate what valve wanted, whatever that it.

Maybe the communication from valve was just not passed on or taken seriously, if there was any?

if you want to argue the point that somebody acted that way, then do so, don't just presuppose it. Because reality doesn't seem to be the way you presuppose it, to me. I'm in this with you, you know? I just want to see your perspective. thumb.gif

edit: oh and, note that people throwing around terms like PC or SJW have little relevance to what actually happened. I too would not want to have anti PC pandering in my production, and SJW is a bad term to use anyway, since it means the opposite of what it says at face value, probably (SJW is a term used to refer to people who have no serious interest in actually fighting for social justice, as far as I'm aware.). Most people might not know that. I could theorize that some people might use it to discredit the importance of (social) justice, but I've never seen anyone actually use the term that way.

Then again, I don't recall hearing anyone relevant to the debate use these terms. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And I mean, if DotA2 wants to have tourneys where there's no mild smack talk in proper english language, following a stylistic code you won't find in serious derogatory banter, about the players and between the casters, there's always LoL tournaments to watch for that...

This obsession with making esports "professional" will kill the game rolleyes.gif

Gabe, this is what the fans like. We already have 18 million dollar tournaments almost entirely funded by the fans. We don't need dota to cater to ESPN watchers.

But hey, Valve being out of touch with the community, nothing new...

Sucks that he got fired, but when you represent a school, company or another entity, it is expected that you conduct yourself in a respectful and meaningful way. I have no issues with what he had to say and i thought it was funny to me in my context, but in a professional situation like that, I believe it was a bad move. One needs to differentiate the setting of a game streamer/Youtube commentator with a setting of a professional tournament with money and sponsors at stake. I have watched a few professional Arena tournaments for WoW and I have always noticed the professionalism in the commentators and the hosts. Those tournaments have reminded me very much of the same professionalism you would find at ESPN. I think there is a time and place for both kinds of behavior but the setting has to be considered.

The irony about the whole situation being, calling someone out an ass is just a no go from Professionalism/PC standpoint, unless it's in good faith.

There's better words to use if you want to have a scientific debate on why people are, for the overwhelming majority, able to enjoy being jerks/asses. (Though I wouldn't go so far as to actually call em that, as a permanent state of being. Additionally, using the analogy to the human body part is also some sort of 'shooting yourself in the leg'-material, if you want to say something serious. It's not a body part that all people like to think about at all times.)

I find Gabe firing someone publicly a little more humorous than the humor presented on stage to be honest.

It's definitely a perk of privately owning your own company.

While the humor in that is not lost on me, I also think we're living in good times for getting around to making illegal, EULA/license terms that forbid or inhibit the reselling of things you spent your money on. Be it licenses to games.

(Also, I think it might become problematic to focus on the thrill of realism in your entertainment, if real humans are getting hurt with it. Particularly if they're not consenting. But still, I see the appeal, don't get me wrong. We're only human.)
