[DS] Gabe Newell Fires Dota 2 Host During Live Tournament. Calls Host 'An Ass'. - Page 10

Regardless of him being himself just like he did his work before, tbh, did anyone see how uncomfortable the people who were around him were regarding his jokes or his comments?
Even they, who knew him from past experiences, seems to give that "oh you went too far there man" vibe. His comments really were hurtful and distasteful.

We can only assume that he didn't even watch it, since his criticsm was just that limited/general.

As a side note (but seriously unrelated to the actual issue), I thought the host was for the most part, very mass market appealing. Of course there's nothing wrong with both of us holding different opinions here.

I would fire any of my employees I hear talking that way while on my clock with customers present.

So, I watched the whole thing...And, after reading everything, I actually agree with James.

The Valve team essentially requested a repeat performance of his previous event...Which he brought. Only this time Gabe actually listened to it, didn't like it...And instead of being upfront about his complete lack of involvement, prior - Decided to take it out on James by saying he was an ass...

It would be like my administrating for you...You run off on vacation to England for 5 months, leave me in charge - Come back, hate what I've done, release a statement saying I'm incompetent when I've done everything that you asked, how you asked...Then you fire me, publicly, during an event.

That's really professional?

So recap - James already hosted 1 MAJOR event. Gabe did not participate. Gabe participates in Shanghai. Gabe comes to a conclusion and fires James, almost on the spot.

Here is Jame's very public statement:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1B061Rs4gw4zkCec35Q5v2r576e_Jd6pJfrT_5_GZ74I/preview

He asked for a "whiteboard" - Was given a setup with paper...rolleyes.gif

They had no internet in Shanghai for over 1/2 of the day - There were a significant amount of issues...

Here's the segment that actually got him fired: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-7GmWF4cmQ

There's actually nothing wrong with it beyond the fact that Gabe didn't like it.

I think it was handled incredibly poorly by Valve but, I'm sure I'm in the minority.

So looking at other videos of him he acted like he always does... Thats what they told him to do so i don't actually see whats wrong with it.

He acted like he usually does. They asked him to be himself because thats why the fans like him. So he acted in a way that his fans like and how he usually does it.

So if you know how somebody hosts an event and tell him to host it like he usually does and you then fire him for doing what they told him todo..... Well you get the idea.

It's been surmised that Gabe never saw his hosting previously but, due to the technical difficulties in Shanghai, he actually did and thus, fired James on the spot.

There also were no problems (according to James) about any of the previous gigs, in fact, if you read his letter, he'd never been approached about ANY issues. There were also clear miscommunications from Valve.

I also noticed this as well. Like they were all afraid to inject any communication at all for fear of association.

This. The internet is absolutely FULL of racist, sexist and just generally over the top offensive people who need to be called to task on their actions more often than they already are. If you wouldn't say it to someones face, why should you be able to say it on the internet without consequence? I admit that I don't play DOTA and I have no clue about the backstory on this incident but I agree that when you're getting paid a wage, a degree of professionalism is to be expected even if your job is to commentate a gaming event. I don't know that Valve/Gabe handled this in an entirely professional way either, but I would say that it seems warranted.

Actually, if you read the statement/view the entire session - It was originally supposed to only be 30mins max, they were anticipating only 20mins - Due to the internet constantly going out and other problems the production had, the segment went on for 90 minutes...

They actually all ran out of content after 30mins and all of them have been contacting him, expressing their issues with the entire situation...

TLDR: They didn't take it personally and they weren't afraid - They literally had nothing to say and weren't getting paid.

So if that's ALL THIS WAS, fine. Okay but, we know for a fact, it's not.

The bottom line is that Gabe re-hired a presenter, never having seen his previous presentations...Finally saw it and called the man publicly an ass - For a segment that lasted not only, 3x as long as was originally intended but, also for a segment that was actually plagued with technical difficulties.

That's negligence. Gabe's negligence. It's not entirely the fault of the presenter no matter how you spin it.

You can blame James for being a "donkey" but, the bottom line is that Gabe's negligence perpetuated the issue and he lied in his official statement when he claimed there were previous issues in an effort to save face.

TLDR: Gabe is as equally responsible for this issue as James is.

Sure thing Masked!

If you got a problem with a point then take it up with the one who made it. I'm just agreeing with his observation, since it was something I had also observed.

I have an issue with your statement and the claim of guilt by association when, we know for a fact, that's not, nor was it ever, the case.

You claimed to have observed an "uneasiness", yes, they were uneasy, the segment lasted for 4-5x the original length it was supposed to so they ran out of content.

All of the presenters "fear of association", no...They feel bad for what happened to James. They've expressed such individually and on his statement.

There was no content beyond 20 minutes. James wasn't given the proper tools to do his job and nobody on the panel was actually getting paid (which is the status quot) so, James was alone...
