If you want to get your hands on Microsoft's holographic headset, the company is now taking pre-orders for the HoloLens Development Edition. Hardware will be shipping to the US and Canada on March 30, just scraping in to Microsoft's first-quarter deadline. As previously announced, the hardware will cost $3,000.

As pictured, the development kit appears to be relatively barebones, containing the HoloLens, a charger, the Bluetooth 4.1 Clicker that leaked earlier this week, a carrying case, a microfiber cloth, and replacement nose pieces. While the HoloLens itself is fully self-contained, running wirelessly and independently.

Considering it's 100% wireless, it's pretty fantastic.

I just wonder how much the final version will cost since Dev Kits are usually the cheaper versions.

Got to start somewhere.

Looking forward to day I get to look back at this tech in its current infancy.

Augmented certainly has its place, but I'd hate to play, say, an FPS or racing game in which the map/track is limited to your living room....

Just get an Omni.

Problem solved.

AR has it's place but AR and VR are not in competition with each other, they serve a different purpose.

Except that augmented reality will allow you to see that you are running on a fancy tread mill in your living room. VR on the other hand will allow you to be running on a battlefield in some far off place with no resemblance to your living room.

This ^

I really don't see how augmented reality and virtual reality are directly comparable. I would love something like augmented reality for meetings, presentations, and applications, and that is exactly what Microsoft is marketing it for! Remember all those application ideas you would see on Reddit that you could submit to Microsoft. But virtual reality is for gaming, someone who is looking for a immersive out of body experience. They both serve their place and I believe in the day that you will have both of these in your home, you won't be choosing one over the other. thumb.gif
