I have an old Asrock 970 Extreme 3 that can OC Phenom II chips to the moon even though it struggles with FX chips.

He is on an AM2+ board iirc and it only supports up to 95 watt chips.

Yes that is the board I'm using now. Why would I have problems OCing with this CPU and not the CPU I had before? I have checked and the board does support it.I'm still fairly new to OCing. Are there any recommendations for another board that will support my set up?

That was somewhat my point. If a new MB/RAM is obtainable for under $100 (USD) in their location it may be worthwhile to move to a newer platform with that CPU.

The board is not really designed to overclock the newer chips, I ran into a similar issue with an MSI 790GX board. AFAIK AM3 Phenom II chips, while somewhat backwards compatible with AM2+ boards are limited by the design of the older boards in regards to power delivery.

Higher end AM2+ boards did not seem to have as many issues as the cheaper ones.

your old one was a 65 watt chip , much easier on the parts of the board that supply power.

You need to back down the overclock , try a 17 multiplier. I've forgotten most of what I knew about that board, but it appears that you may have it set to throttle at 40C in bios?

So is there anyway to lower the voltage to up the multiplier so that the vcore isn't to high? Son is it the board that is cause it to stick at idle speeds when overclocked.

I know I'm not up to par with my hardware and that's not that big a deal to me. As it is I'm running 60fps playing Black Ops II. I guess my board just isn't that great. I've used this board for about 7 years and had to finally replace it with the same one because I've always liked this board. Are there any boards that y'all would recomend? DDR2, Phenom II,....

BTW y'all have been very helpful and gave me a lot tips and new insight to OCing that I didn't know. I'm going to try some of the suggestions when I get home.

I do not know if you will find a quality DDR2 board new anymore.

You will probably be better off going to AM3+/DDR3 with that CPU.

Something like this would probably do fine with the Phenom II 960T...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128602

And this RAM...

Fairly cheap all together, though I don't have any personal experience with that board it should be quite a bit better as it supports 125w processors.

The downside to going to ddr3 as I just spent money on buying the RAM that I have which is ddr2, all at the same time I got a new cooler, power supply, processor, graphics card
post #30 of 87
You could put the old components with the old board and see if you could sell it, or keep it as a backup.

I hope you didnt pump more than ~100$ into more DDR2 ram, as that cost could have easily bought a MB and DDR3 RAM.
