HTC revealed today that is has sold more than 15,000 HTC Vive VR kits in the first 10 minutes after it went on sale for preorder. That’s not bad for an unproven technology that costs $800 and requires a $1,000 PC. This comes as companies like Facebook, Google, and Samsung are all moving into this sector. Investment bank Goldman Sachs predicts VR could grow into a $110 billion business by 2020 along with the similar augmented reality tech that mixes digital images with the real world — and Vive is one of the consumer products that could drive those revenues.

I'm really curious as to how much they've sold in total, or how much they'll have sold in the duration of week, and also how this compares to the Oculus Rift.

VR will certainly be very interesting to watch as it develops, the PlayStation VR's pricing is soon to be announced and the product is launching soon too.

I don't think early sales are going to be a problem for VR. I think long term usage will be.

If developers and publishers would get off their asses (errr... on their asses) and put out some fresh content, the tech has potential. If not, it'll just be Virtual Boy with better graphics.

I still am not really too interested in VR yet but I haven't tried it. Between Occulus and the Vive though I am more interested in the HTC unit for the expanded feature set. Seems like the closest of the two to real VR...

This version of VR is a passing fad just like 3D. I will wait for Holorooms or Sword Art Online type immersion.

Yeah, but as long as the total number of Vive owners is in the tens of thousands, the market isn't there to develop full-fledged AAA games for the platform. The problem with room-scale games is that you have to develop for VR only to get a good result and the games rarely make sense on a conventional system. This is extremely limiting in terms market size compared to stuff like sim titles (racing, etc.) where the VR experience is essentially the same as the regular gameplay, but with the added ability to turn your head.

I think simple head tracking for camera movement in a FPS game using a keyboard and mouse for normal controls is the killer app for VR.

That's still the single most annoying thing about FPSs and most games, quickly turning the camera left or right to see what going on around you.

How would you handle aiming? Competitive FPS gaming doesn't seem feasible.
