If my card dies now, buy 970 immediately? Or buy a $120 card and switch to latest gen when needed?

long story short, graphic card is dying. Thing is, Pascal seems to be coming out. I saw some of the graphs and I really liked them. Obviously can't trust those graphs 100% but I'd prefer to wait regardless. Putting my 570 on life support while praying at the same time.

But what if it does die out before Pascal arrives in time?

A) Well, if I were to pick a graphic card that I like to stick with, I would go with the 970. I'm an RPG guy. With 970, I can play dragon age 3 and witcher 3 on "high" with no problems while opening up other options as well. I haven't bought these games yet, but with 970 I can buy them and play them whenever I feel needed.

B) Here's the thing, 970 is approaching 1.5 years old. Isn't as attractive as it was a year ago. Should I cheap out, buy a sub-$150 card instead and switch to next gen when I REALLY need to? Potentially I could hang on to a $100~120 card for more than a year if I don't buy those new fancy RPG games. I'm currently playing dota 2, shadowrun games, just games that aren't that graphic intensive in general.

Which do you think is the better choice? A or B?

Sorry for late edit : Living in Asia, second hand market isn't common here. Please keep suggestions to new products (things rotate out pretty fast here), thanks.

Since you intend to get pascal anyway, i suggest to cheap out for now. In fact, if i were you, i'd try to get a pre-owned card.

Bake it, if it dies.

The GTX 970 will be overkill for the game you play. You can cheap out for a while and grab some cheap used AMD card. The R9 290 is a beast and for the price I don't think anything can beat it. However, price seem much higher than what I paid in october (160$USD)... I wouldn't pay more than ~200 for one and no more than 100 for a 7970. That's what it used to sell for.

thanks for all the suggestions guys. Sadly, here in where I live, second hand market isn't common. Hell, enthusiast PC gaming itself isn't common either.

should have mentioned this earlier, sorry guys.

I know the games I currently play aren't intensive at all. For option A, I will be buying the 970 and stick with it. If I do decide to go for 970, I will be sticking with it for the new games to come.

Definitely won't be buying 970 as a mid-way solution and switch to pascal. That's a waste of money.

If you don't think you'll be running any GPU-intensive games in the near future, the 970 will probably see you through to whatever comes after Pascal and the next generation of AMD cards.

Even if you could get something on the secondary market, the prices are crazy right now. Someone sold two 6970's for $85 each on the OCN swaplist not too long ago, for a GPU that AMD recently put into legacy status. I paid $55 for a used 6970 on here in November of 2014. A used 7970 can set you back $150 or more these days, which is way too much for something that's been out for more than four years.

The 970 would do the job for you, but I'd try to make that 570 last until Pascal drops before I made the investment in a 970.

I don't think those prices are representative of the general market, I reckon you could get a 7950 for around the $120 mark which will last you until next gen.

EDIT: What country are you buying in?

Hong Kong. Not a country, but you know, has its own currency and PC market.

Second hand market isn't a large community here and cards in shops rotate out pretty fast in general. I think I can locate a second hand market online but I doubt if I should try that at all.

I'd say try to find a 2nd hand one first. I live in a country smaller than your islands but there are plenty good video card in the 2nd hand market here smile.gif
